An explosive new book accusing the Mormon Church's leading scholar of sexually abusing his daughter has the Church reeling. In "Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith", Dr. Martha Beck claims her father, Dr. Hugh Nibley, professor emeritus of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, molested her when she was a young child.
Additionally, the New York Times reports that Dr. Beck had once written a Mormon "ex-gay" book with her husband, John C. Beck. The two are now divorced and openly gay. Another astonishing blow to the embarrassingly bogus ex-gay myth!
4 Comments:
Martha Nibley Beck and John C. Beck's book, "Breaking The Cycle Of Compulsive Behavior", is still sold* by ex-gay groups such as the Mormon group EvergreenInternational.org. Someone should tell Evergreen that the authors' have returned to their "compulsive behavior".
FYI: Martha Beck's father, Hugh Nibley, died yesterday**. I'm skeptical of the recovered memory movement and it seems unfair that Beck waited so long to accuse her elderly father.

I was bulemic in the early 1990s, and read a number of books and talked to professionals to try to get out of that. "Breaking The Cycle Of Compulsive Behavior" was the only source gave me what I needed to break out of that. It's been years since I purged, so I'm very grateful to Martha and John Beck for that book. "Breaking The Cycle Of Compulsive Behavior" was quite clear that the threat of backsliding is always imminent, and that one must constantly press forward in order to avoid backsliding. The book was also clear that if you backslide, that this does not mean that you are irrecoverable.
I strongly recommend the book to anyone who wishes to escape a pattern of behavior that makes them unhappy.
