(Extremist James Dobson Has Coronary Over Filibuster Compromise)
For the good of the country, it was wise for Senators to strike a compromise on the filibuster of judicial nominees. They temporarily averted a catastrophe and avoided setting a dangerous precedent. However, it is clear by the statements of many leading right wing Senators that this may be more of a transitory deferral than a true deal. The real test will come when Bush eventually nominates an extremist to the Supreme Court.
Here is a snapshot of how the GLBT Community and major players fared in the compromise:
The right is absolutely nuts. I think you nailed this on the head, Wayne. I was disappointed at HRC's and PFAW's undo optimism on this. They weretoo sunny. Who do they think they are kidding?
Sara, like all right wingers, is dreaming. We will fight back and win.

Sara, The Lord is not on your side. You may think he is - but he is not. The Lord is on the side of Truth, love, understanding, and respect.
The religious right wing in this Country is very unchristian. The Lord is not amused by people like Dobson and Robertson. They are for the rich and powerful - they use religion as a weapon to hurt others. Gerald

These so-called "conservatives" are anything but conservative. What they want is to use the government to run other people's private matters and force their religious views down other people's throats by turning America into an autocratic theocracy. The Terri Schiavo case is a screaming example of what's to come if there are not some major changes made to the make-up of Capitol Hill during the next election cycle.

The upshot of this will probably be something like the situation in Western Europe. Empty churches, a population indifferent if not hostile to the claims of Christianity, a church left to the loons of both sides and gay people pretty much accepted as real ordinary type humans. Not a bad situation. Would any gay person choose living in Most Christian Alabama over PostChristian Sweden? Not in a lucid moment. Christianity is on its way out in the advanced world. It hangs on in the US and the semi-developed countries, but is increasingly a fringe movement.
In some ways, Wicca appears to be a more real spirituality for those not part of the extreme right.
