President George W. Bush's pick for the Supreme Court is, at the moment, a bit of a mystery man. However, the upbeat reaction by the far right may portend trouble. Here is the initial word from a couple of key groups on the nomination.
That is right liberals. You are doomed. No more judicial activism for you people. No more homosexulity form the bench. The Bible will be back in the court where it belongs.
I hope the new Judge isnt as hateful and ignorant as Joe in MS. Anyone who thinks the bible belongs in a courtroom (except for swearing in believers) is totally ignorant of basic law. Also Joe, your gloating is temporary!! As the history of all civil rights movements has shown, there will inevitably be setbacks, even major ones; but ultimately once the oppressed have tasted justice and freedom, there's no turning back. They eventually prevailed and SO WILL WE!! I was 15 at the time of the Stonewall riots and remember that at that time, Gay people just wanted to have BASIC protections in jobs, housing etc from all of you love filled 'christians'. At that time I NEVER in my wildest dreams would have thought that by this time in my life Gay marriage would be legal in 1 state (and counting) and also legal in several major(and more advanced) nations in the world like Canada and Spain. Bush and the neocons approval ratings are in the toilet, the Downing ST memos proved he LIED to get us into a war which resulted in THOUSANDS of deaths and mutilations, to punish their enemies, Rove outed an undercover CIA operative which is treason and smeared and ruined the careers of countless others. If Joe thinks these are 'christian' values, thank God(dess) I'm not one of them. By the way, why are you reading this site?? I smell another self-loathing closet case! Gary in NJ

I'm going to ignore Joe's comments because of their shear stupidity. The more I watch the direction of the United States from a Canadian perspective the more I shake my head in disbelief. These court appointments are about the 2 leading items on the christian hate group agendas: abortion and ostrasizing gay people. My belief is that if god does exist, these people are in for a rude awakening when they are judged because of the way they have distorted the whole meaning of christianity. Tim W

Joe's comments are the best example of what really go on. These people pay so much attention to hate people who actually think, that they forget that ther own right will be taken, and they will cheer up for that too. Focus on hating homosexuality and following a Bible that they don't even understand, keep them from looking at the bigger picture, what happen to taxes, to social services, etc. They will notice that what they support will turn against them... and them we will see if they laugh that much.

Ah yes, how true. If the Radical Religious Right loves him....then he is wrong for us. As for the lovely examples of Christian love shown us on our web site...SHAME on you! You call yourselves Christians? What a lousy witness you are to the true love of Jesus. You show the true blackness of your heart by the hate that spews out of your mouth in the name of God. I cannot ever imagine Jesus on line sending such vile comments as above. How could you ever consider that to be WWJD? The true nature of the Radical Christian Right is shown by their hatred....and the leader of the pack is the Focus on the Family, Fred Phelps, etc, groups that are all clammoring for their new Judicial Messiah in Judge Roberts. Just remember my so called Christian Friends...the pendulum swings both ways...enjoy your moment now! When fair minded Americans everywhere figure out that the Right is on the verge of taking over every right and stamping the Bibles name on it...watch out...that pendulum will swing the other way...and your lust for victory will go away! Oh, and don't blame us for it either...it will be...God's Will! For He is fair minded, and protects the little guy.

Another thought for you conservative republicans. Polls show that the vast majority (60 some percent I believe) of Americans don't want Roe v Wade overturned. If or when it is, the backlash will result in LOTS more votes for DEMOCRATS!!! For every action.... Put that in your bong and smoke it! Assholes!

People who claim to know the Bible, Particularly in the "Bible belt" have never ever undergo any biblivl training, that is why they quote -like parrots- passages that they don't understand.
I still don't understand when civil liberties became a matter of right vs. left in America. Even some right wingers claim to live in "the free world" and yet praise the death of such liberties. I see a lot of ignorance about: public policy, Biblical interpretation, politics in general and history.
What I understand is that the current system in place has encouraged the kind of mentality that people like the so called Joe praise. Is a matter to just give "bread and circus" like in ancient Rome, so they don't think about their own lacks, rahter, rejoice in the sadness of others.
The so called "christian" preachers that support the right wingers have made a carrier giving people their own ideas -Never God's ideas- but the real truth is that, the whole thing is part of a system that is designed to make this people fearful of a God that they don't even know, and because they have little access to information or are just plain lazy, they rather repeat what others say, rather than analyze.
Looke at the case of the Schiavo woman, she was just used as a pretext to impose an agenda, and people that suported her pain -I mean keeping her alive- did not care for her, but for the agenda of their preachers.
Don't waste time in the joe (note the lower case) entity, the time now for people who think, is to come up with ideas on how to deffend the true Spirit of America, independent and free.

I doubt if John Roberts' nomination is going to yield a comparable figure to Souter and O'Connor. Bush was careful to nominate a candidate acceptable to the extreme right wing of his party, the party that engenders the likes of that ignorant hick "Joe" from Jackson, MS.
I am gay, but I am a Christian as well. I was a Christian long before I began coming out, and I haven't altered my core religious beliefs except regarding homosexuality. I contribute to the Human Rights Campaign, and it disturbs me that their article links gay rights with Roe vs. Wade. My support for gay rights does NOT entail support for abortion. And I really don't know why a gay rights organization is concerned about abortion since homosexual relationships do not result in procreation. HRC is a special interest group, and it should limit the criteria by which it critiques judicial nominees to -- GAY RIGHTS. That is the only reason I contribute to HRC, and I don't appreciate the implication that just because I support gay rights, I must support abortion.

I am gay and I am religious myself. I think I was born gay and I learned to be a Christian later on (and I learn that every day, through love, compassion and care for my neighboor, regardless gender, thank you). I support the right of abortion because -we like it or not- there are women, that in the community we often identify as Lesbians (duh!). But even if a woman is not a Lesbian, women have traditionally being great supporters of LGBT causes. Women are friends and sisters too, and I don't see why a woman have to be stuck to a unwanted child, that prevent her from growing and becoming full. I think that supporting the rigt to abortion should be consider a Christian value, otherwise, the view is fully Machista and Chauvinist. Women should have ALL the necessary provissions to enjoy the gift of sexuality, without worring about unwanted children that can eventually be a burden.
some people just say "what if your mother aborted you?" and my response to that was: My parents (and particularly my mother) were educated and responsible enough to bring:
1) Only the children they could happily support and give an education.
2) We all were planned and my parents expected us anxiously!
Thinking that a tennager woman, or a poor woman with litte education and less resources that is pregnant shouldn't have the right to abottion is plain evil!

"I think that supporting the rigt to abortion should be consider a Christian value"
Pretty harsh on the child, that. I support the right to be true to your sexual orientation -- in a moral fashion. I don't support the right to irresponsible sex, the consequences of which can be evaded by terminating the life of an unborn child.
I don't think genuine Christian values can be used to excuse or nullify the consequences of bad behavior.

And I don't think that Sex is per-se bad behavior... we all come as the fruit of one (at least) beautiful) sexual act.
Let's not leve in denial, unwanted pregnancies are the result of the misinformation and lack of sexual education. Are misinforming people, denying them education about THEIR OWN BODY and taking away the right to correct anunfortunated mistake Christian values? I don't think so, I think, and I sustain, that it is pure evil, is a matter to want to maintain the status Q and about to -actually- denying women the right to decide what to do with their own body.

The argument that a woman has the right to do what she wants with "her own body" has always come up short with me. In pregnancy, a woman is carrying something that cannot rightly be considered "her own body." A mother doesn't have the right to destroy the body of her child once it has emerged from the womb. I see nothing logical -- most certainly nothing ethical -- in saying that she has the right while the child's body resides in her womb.

BTW, I wonder if, when science links homosexuality with genetics, the gay culture will be so accepting of the "morality" of abortion. When abortions are performed by parents who wish to avoid having a gay son or lesbian daughter, what will the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal say about it?
