Threaten a man's masculinity, and he will assume more macho attitudes, according to a study by a Cornell University researcher. "I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," said Robb Willer, a sociology doctoral candidate at Cornell. Willer is presenting his findings Aug. 15 at the American Sociological Association's 100th annual meeting in Philadelphia.
"Masculine overcompensation is the idea that men who are insecure about their masculinity will behave in an extremely masculine way as compensation. I wanted to test this idea and also explore whether overcompensation could help explain some attitudes like support for war and animosity to homosexuals," Willer said.

How true. Most gay bashers are bashing out of ithers what they can't bash in themselves.
This comes as no surprise to me. I think there are deep psychological reasons why most heterosexual men behave this way. I think it is about conflict, the harboring of same sex attraction though not acting on it and fear of being exposed. Its a lot of other things, societal norms, religious influence/oppression, and lately the ex-gay movement hasn't helped matters. Lets face it, they have to prove more than we do to be masculine but turns them into neanderthals in the process. I also think they are envious of us for a number of reasons, begrudingly reluctant to even admit it. We haven't heard the end of this. Would like to find out what the conclusion is to this study and where it will lead.
This is not news, behing every homophobe, there is a man (particularly) trying to run away from the known or suspected desires to be in the arms of another man. I a not sure how does this work for women, but in the case of man, it is just enough to see what it is considered in some groups "male bonding" to realize that there is a very thin line betwen enjoying a football game and enjoying looking at those hot athletes. It is also pretty easy to perceive the same attitude in Baseball palyers. And what about Saunas? Male love the company of other naked men, but we have to go a long way to accept that many would love to be in the arms of their favorite quarter back, first base or goalee...

This seems plausible to me. It seems clear that male homophobia is usually directed toward male homosexuals and not so much toward the idea of homosexuality in the broader sense. One piece of evidence is that large numbers of men are turned on by porn with lesbian scenes. Porn filmmakers are churning this stuff out because there is a market for it, and it's not being marketed to women.

Yeah, I could never understand the lesbian porn for hetero men either. I was talking to a woman who owned a video store at one time and she told me that she was surprised at how many women take out gay male porn; though this seems to be much less common than men watching two women. I think many heteros are curious yellow, but the women are acculturated to less homophobic about it than men are. Gary (NJ)

I think that the whole think obbey in part to a larger problem: The way some perceive gender roles and identity. This past friday, the NY Blade printed an article writen by a journalist who attended the Exodus conference in N.C. She noted that the idea of gender roles and identity -as understood by the fundamentalist western Christian views- has to do with establishing a difference between male "roughness" and female "sensitivity" and how some of the teachings behinnd "changing" someone's sexual orientation (there is not such thing as "prefference")are based on enjoying what is different... so on those premmises, rough women can not be heterosexuals and like men! after I could control my laughing, I started thinking about the bunch of things that we are told since we are children: that boys don't cry, that girls don't play sports, and so on the list of nonsense. If we truly believe everything that our parents tell us, and internalized that being gay is necessarily being femenine, then the problem start with the idea that women are inferior, so any man with female qualities (we all have them, gay or not) is not acceptable and that it is ok to bullie him and so on.
Hypermasculinity is nothing but a self assurance attitude, and yes, it is accentuated when a man -as animal- feel threaten by something. Even gay men call each other names and are not very nice to each other sometimes, because a part of us have -sadly- some internalized homophobia somewere- based on what I just described. Classism is nothing but the fear to threaten Status Q, so is racism, and xenophobia obbey to the same principle: Hating those that I consider inferior, before they prove to be better than I am!

Richard and Gary, I totally agree with both of you on this one. I think its also backed up by the fact that on AOL there are many chat rooms listing "str8 dudes look too". I find it odd they describe themselves as str8 yet are looking for other "str8" males to get off with either via cyber or in real time.
As for the straight males getting off watching lesbian porn, I find that very telling. Notice how revolted they are when it comes to male on male porn? So transparent where they're coming from. If only the poor idiots could lighten up and accept who they really are deep down. i'm so thankful I was born gay, even with all the slings and arrows, I wouldn't change for one NY minute.
