Morality czar, gambling junkie and virtues peddler Bill Bennet made an interesting statement on his radio show. Media Matters reports that in response to a caller on Bill Bennett's Morning In America, the host said:
"I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."
Bennett should apologize for his obnoxious and offensive remarks. How would he like if I suggested that if the babies of conservative parents were aborted hypocrisy would go down?

It is just shocking that persons actually spew such garbage in 2005. Why is that statement considered free speech. It is hate speech. So much for the disappearance of racism

If a 'liberal' democrat had said that (not they would have) all hell would have broken loose. This slur went virtually unreported on our conservative controlled media.

Oh give me a break! I'm a democrat personally and have no love for Bill "the moralizer" Bennett, but that doesn't change the fact that his comment was completely taken out of context and wildly distorted.
This is all incredibly absurd. He was simply positing a hypothetical and even called the idea "morally reprehensible" and he made it during a philosophical discussion with a caller to his radio show.
Get off the "hate speech" bandwagon and examine what the man actually meant and the context in which it was said. This is truly ridiculous. I would expect this kind of thing from the Republicans.

it was still an idiotic thing to say!

Dear Chris L.:
President Bush's reaction to Bennett's remarks, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, "The president believes the comments were not appropriate."

Now you trust what George W. Bush says? That's interesting! The fact is that the president will say almost anything that his advisers tell him to say. In this case, they are simply inoculating themselves politically against this.

The inoculations are too late; they're already covered with oozing buboes and spitting up blood. Gary (NJ)

... and Trent Lott was simply trying to make an "old man feel good"! (speaking to that old 'fuck-bag' Strom Thurmond at his birthday party)
Behind closed doors or out with the good ole boys ... you can bet these Republican's call us Queers and use the "N" word -- with severe prejudice when "not on the record".
I agree. One of the things that most characterizes Republicans is their utter lack of enlightenment concerning people and cultures who are different than they are. They don't understand people who are different, and, quite frankly, they don't want to understand.
