From San Francisco's Castro District to Provincetown, the hard bodied and cool are displaced in favor of cold hard cash. Gentrification is having a dramatic impact on everything from the GLBT bar scene to politics. The question is, can the GLBT Community survive and thrive without the cocoon of the traditional gay ghetto?
I hate the gay ghetto and I'm gay. When I go to West Hollywood, all those muscled, tank-topped queers are so shallow and full of themselves. I much prefer the more substantial people I meet in Encino, where I live now.
Sounds like Tom is a sad, bitter queen who is probably fat and saggy. Those of us who have a life and work out love gay ghettos. Let Tom and his fat ass buddies hide in Encino and pout at Wal-Mart. I'll be shakin in the city.
I used to live in Chelsea and now I live in Queens. I can no longer afford to live where I want. What is happening is not positive change and my life sucks. I need a lottery ticket.
Alex, stuck in Shitty ol Queens

The Gay ghetto, a very romantic 50's 70's concept, became a center of discrimination within our own community. Examples? Chelsea and West Hollywood. Isn't the Gay Ghetto supposed to be for fags? in stead, it has become a "pageant" place, where discrimination based on age, body fat and bad hair are more the norm and less the exeption.
Many gay couples have become more attrackted to less ghetto environments, in which is ok no to belong to any of the "clubs" (muscle Queens, Twinks, bears... you name it)

Stop whining poor fags. I'm a rich queer and if you aren't, too damn bad. I worked hard for my money so I can live in DuPont Circle. If you don't like it, get a real job. Oh, and by the way, vote Republican.
Ok, Gay and Republican is an Oximoron. The ghetto is not for everyone (an honey, Dupont Circle is as boring as the last state of the union!) To be gay I don't need the acceptance of all these fags.
Gay and Republican! That is Sad!

Gay Ghettos are depressing - the people's values, etc.
However, they can also be interesting too and I would hate to see them go. I would never choose to live in one but visiting them can be fun sometimes.
