Arnold Schwarzenegger said this afternoon that he will veto the same-sex marriage bill passed by the California Legislature last night by a vote of 41-35. His press secretary, Margita Thompson, issued the following statement at just before 5:30 p.m.:
"In Governor Schwarzenegger's personal life and work in public service, he has considered no undertaking to be more noble than the cause of civil rights. He believes that gay couples are entitled to full protection underthe law and should not be discriminated against based upon their relationship. He is proud that California provides the most rigorous protections in the nation for domestic partners. Five years ago the matter of same-sex marriage was placed before the people of California. The people voted and the issue is now before the courts. The Governor believes the matter should be determined not by legislative action -- which would be unconstitutional -- but by court decision or another vote of the people of our state. We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote. Out of respect for the will of the people, the Governor will veto AB 849."
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's actions are shameful and a permanent stain on his legacy. He could have stood for equality, but instead he sided with bigotry. He is a disgrace to his office and is clearly on the wrong side of history. Please take a minute and call the Governor's office to tell him what you think of his awful actions. He needs to hear from you, and calling 916-445-2841 or e-mailing him at, governor@governor.ca.gov is safer than expressing your displeasure to his face, becasue he can probably beat you up.

I totally agree. They are all dangerous scum. Even the moderates are sick pigs. WHat an awful swine. And to think that Gray Davis was recalled for this jerk. Even though Davis was a jerk too.

I'm really fuzzy on how California works (pretty weirdly, from what I understand) but isn't there something of a point to this argument? If the majority said no, then what can you do?

Personally I'm not for gay marriage. I'm certainly not against it, but if you ask me, marriage is an outdated concept that needs to be deregulated. Then everyone can have a civil partnership, and people can get married in their churches or however they want.

Did we really think he would sign? I didn't. Don't count on any democrat either. They are all career politicians and cater to the heterosexual majority's wishes, very few have the guts to do the right thing, never have, never will. Lets face it, they don't like us, they want us to disappear no matter what side of the aisle they're on. Time for civil unrest I think, big time. Its the only language they understand. We need to start bashing back and lets start outing as many as we can for starters. Enough of the grovelling at the feet of these mealy-mouthed politicians, it gets us nowhere. They dont' give a rat's ass about us.

Willie: to be really cynical about marriage even though I'm for it merely in terms of the civil rights it bestows on heterosexuals, if you look at it from another perspective, its a form of legalized prostitution. In those days when married women didn't work, the husband provided the income. In return, the wife kept house, cooked, cleaned and offered her body up in return for the man's gratification and reward for his hard work. Its all a creation of the male heterosexual, nothing more. It wasn't until judaism and christianity came along that it became institutionalized and moralized as the ideal condition. To date, it hasn't done such a great job around the world either. Still in all, it doesn't alter the fact that we should have the same rights as every other heterosexual even if we call it by another name. I can live with civil unions provided it offers identical rights and privileges without exception.

Its time to veto "them" at all future elections, democrats included. Both republicans and democrats are almost indistinguishable when it comes to our civil rights, none will speak up for us. None believe we are entitled to full civil rights as taxpayers. Its ok to discriminate against gays, get the picture. Kerry made that quite clear in the last election. What a waste of my vote that was. Never again!

Lee, for many years to come, we may have no choice but to get the hell out of this country, something the fundies would love anyway, but why would any gay person want to stay in a country where he or she is not wanted let alone denied basic human rights? We're not getting them soon, not in our lifetime. I realize not everyone can do that but I'm seriously thinking about it now. I don't see much of a future for gays in this society. Girlie man's veto is only going to promote more violence and hatred against us, but its ok now to discriminate now that its been institutionalized by the right and by voters who support it.

I tell you what. Just for the hell of it, why don't we push for the removal of all of the rights and privileges of marriage granted to heterosexuals and let them see what its like to be disciminated against. Let them file as single earners and lets take away their breeder allowances while we're at it paid for by gay tax dollars. Its an abomination.

When I first read the good news about the marriage leglislation passing in California, I was extremely impressed given the fact that many states are determined to place gays in second class status...permanently. Now, California has the chance to say enough is enough to the government sanctioned gay bashing and vote on the side of equality and the governor chooses to veto it. The whole issue has come down to persons for whatever reasons, religious, secular, see granting gays equality as them loosing something that is what it is all about, never did believe the preservation or sanctity of marriage bullshit. What are these individuals really losing? I think what people have lost is the simple concept of mutual respect and treat those in the manner in which I expect to be treated. A simple concept, that unfortunately, is lost. And I like your comments Robert about taking away some rights and privileges of the hetero population based on who they are. The tide would turn rather quickly. By the way, have read some crap by one Nathan Tibor on Americandaily.com, very pathetic and factually incorrect, quotes Paul "life expectancy 42 years" Cameron. It would be nice to see Arnold have a change of heart but somehow I doubt it's possible even with Maria Shriver's intervention. Tim W.

Tim, I would love to see the evidence, if any, as to how gay marriage in Massachusetts has had a direct impact let alone affected any heterosexual marriage starting with that fascist idiot in the White House. Maybe Girlie man could help us out? If everyone recalls, Bush was the one who said granting same-sex marriage rights to gays would threaten the foundation of society and send a confusing message to children. Bring it on, George, lets see the evidence. So far, the only threat to a decent society are the power hungry republicans and their elitist policies.

Tim, hypothetically speaking, if the fundies in California had proposed rounding up gays and throwing them in internment camps to get rid of us from society and such legislation had passed several years ago, I've no doubt in my mind that Girlie Man would have been swift in signing it to honor the people's wishes. These are not neocons, but neo-nazis and look who is the "governator", none other than the son of an alleged former Austrian nazi. His trainer was too!
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/09/2005 6:48 AM

There is absolutely no evidence that gays marrying has any negative effect whatsoever on society or any heterosexual marriage. The supposed "threat" was drummed up by the religious right to create contempt towards gay people and by and large, Karl Rove placed into the Chimpy's brain and voila, the people bought it and want to keep those evil gays from destroying their family and society, just like the terrorist. Actually, the couple who pioneered gay marriage in Canada attempted to cross the border in 2003 and were refused filing customs as a family and the "Concerned Women for America" labelled them domestic terrorists. That shows the stupidity of these people and what lowlifes they truly are. The gay community needs to get its act together and crush these hate groups, surely we have the financial resources to do it and should, there is a lot at stake. Also, if Awnald vetos this bill, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye as I'm sure he's hoping. Tim W.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/09/2005 9:09 AM

Tim, I wholeheartedly agree with you. But its also about power, religious and political over our community. We are the new jews of the 21st century, the scapegoat for all of society's ills. When you get republican right wing fundies blaming us for Katrina, then you know what we're dealing with. They all think along the same lines, anything to advance their agenda and to keep them in power. The real enemy of America isn't the terrorist threat, but republicans. They are a cancer in society and its already beginning to eat away at our basic civil rights. They've subverted the constitution and know how to swifly enact legislation to prevent us from particpating fully as first class citizens. Its deliberate and bordering on tyrrany if not already. They don't believe in equality, they never have and they never will. We are now living under an theocratic oligarchy dictated by right wing religious fundamentlists. We are therefore NOT a true democracy, we never were, unlike Holland, Belgium, Spain and now Canada. They realized what democracy was all about and did the right thing. Its too late for us, I'm afraid. Its all very nice to hear that over 50% of Americans agree that gays should have protections, but we shouldn't settle for that. As taxpayers, we have a fundamental human right to every civil right bestowed on the rest of the country, without exception. Absent that, then its all over for us.

I have no knowledge of the governator's actions in California. I have no taste for politics what so ever so I'm not going to get into them. As far as Arnold's bodybuilding career and steroid use, yes, he did use them. He only used them when they were still legal however, and yes, they were legal for some time (General George S. Patton II (yes from WWII) also used them while training for the Olympics.) I don't care about his politics, but I do know that throughout Arnold's life, he has tried to live out the American dream and I am confident he is doing all he can to help California.

P.S. I personally think he should have stuck with film making.

Members of society express there opinons on an issue, such as same sex marriage, and you express your opinon. And what is your response? Aleinate the individual, refer to the as "sick pigs' or allude to the fact that you think he is a Nazi? I don't see the opposing side refering to you in such an uncivilzed manner. Perhaps you should bring up pertinent arguments, maybe conjure up a unique thought and have a discussion. But maybe thats too hard... the current thrid grade tactics are much easier.

" i don't have one."
"yur parents split up?"

i would honestly say, who cares? whocares whether u r gay or not? i could care less, just because ur gay, doesnt mean ur less of a person, it just means u like ur own sex more than the other, there should b nothing wrong with it, and i say agian who cares? if ur gay, and wanna get married, i would ask the question,y? getting married is highly overrated, personally, if u meet someone u want to stay with forever, just by being with them is enough, getting a certifacate for ''being married'' by some freaky religious dude?....no thanks

Christian republican mother fuckers! Whats the point if they are allowed to get married there is no such thing as god anyway and marriage is an out dated ideology.

And if you say there is a god then go back in time and tell the Greeks that Zeus is only mythology, they’ll kill you; just like Christians killed none believers of hundreds of years ago. It’s all bullshit because everyone is afraid to die… We created god in our image. …Just like we created rockets, mathematics and compound interest.

Dear Robert Bayside,
are you aware that you have contradicted yourself, you have absolutly no idea what the hell you are talking about. you said that mariage is just something that you do and then you said that "they" deny you basic rights of it! do you want to get married or dont you? obviously the dicks that you suck go straight to your head because all you are is a fucking pissed off rectum strecher. I dont like gay marriage and I dont like fags. If you had any spuituality at all you would know that God created us to "be furtile and MULTIPLY".

I believe that Govenor Swartzenneggar is right in vetoing the bill, and he has every right to do so.

gay marriage is wrong on every level. Sex is for one man and one woman who are in the loving and sacred bond called marriage.

marriage is not something that you do to pay less taxes it is what you a given when you love with your whole mind heart and body and it is amazing.

God made man only for woman that is why the parts are so compatable

Adam and EVE not Steve you will noticie that you have a biological mother and a biological father not two of one or the other.

BE FURTILE AND MULTIPLY

This goes to the guy who expected the next Christian Republican to cuss him out or curse him:
God loves you. He's infinite, omnipotent, loving, forgiving, and I have seen Him do miraculous things that I dare you to scientifically or medically explain to me. You can't. He loves you so much that He sent His son (Jesus Christ) to die for your sins so that you can go to Heaven when you die. Ont the third day Jesus rose from the dead. He loves you no matter who you are or what you've done.
I'm not going to cuss you out because I don't use that kind of language. I'm just going to show you His amazing love.
And with regards to the gay marriage issue, I believe that marriage and sex was create by God for a man and a woman.
I am a Christian Republican, and God loves you.

They act like they're the only group that's disriminated against when, in reality, the discrimination is minial compared to those of the Native American and African American groups. If you want to be gay, be gay, but don't push it on the rest of us.
