Last night I watched the new ABC television drama "Commander In Chief". It stars Geena Davis as a the first woman president. First, I think the show was excellent. Second, I like the way it portrays the creationism Speaker of the House as a backward savage.
The most important thing this show will do is help the fortunes of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Don't laugh, fiction often sets the stage for reality. A few years of watching a woman rule the world on television will make it easier for many Americans to accept a woman in the White House. In my view, this show, if it takes off, might be the most important thing that has happened to her campaign. After rooting for a fictional woman president, electing a real one won't seem like such a stretch.

Hillary, I wish I could concur. I admire her intellect, she would make a far better president than Bush of course, but don't lose sight of the fact that she opposes full civil rights for gays and lesbians, just like her husband.
Wayne's analysis has hit the bull's-eye, but I would go a step further. People often only truly accept a new concept after it has already happened. (Most human beings are simply not natural trailblazers).
This series has been intentionally hatched in Hollywood to do just that, to make America as comfortable with the idea of a woman president as though it had already happened. Even though this series is fiction, it will have the desired effect and will indeed help Mrs. Clinton in her quest.
As for the notion that she doesn't "support full equality" for gays and lesbians, no kidding. She's a politician like any other, and in these times, it is almost impossible to find one who is willing to risk their future by providing real moral leadship. She just isn't that type, and if you think otherwise, you will be sorely disappointed.
The choice will between her and allowing the country to be controlled by the republican party for another four long years. I'll vote for the lying democrat over the lying republican almost any day.

I'm sure the bible bangers will find something about the show to bitch about; like it's contrary to biblical laws to have a woman ruling over men. Of course if she's a right-winger like Maggie Thatcher was, they would conveniently look the other way like they always do when it's one of their own. Gary (NJ)

Yes, we would all probably have to vote for the least of the two "evils", but what a sad state of affairs that we have to vote for liars and career politicians who really don't give a damn about our rights, as long as they have theirs and we give them the power to do it. So damn sleazy and corrupt.
