The Boston Globe ran a really good article today on a sexual conversion group invading Boston. Brenna Simonds, who runs a small ex-gay ministry, has the audacity to tell the reporter that she doesn't care who wins the political battles over same-sex marriage.
However, if you read further it says that her "ex-gay" ministry is less than one block from the State House. Well, how convenient. For a person who claims not to care about politics, her prime location sure makes it easy to lobby at a moments notice. These slick "ex-gay" political lobbyists who say they aren't involved in lobbying against gay rights, remind me of the 400 lbs. man walking out of an all-you-can-eat buffet saying that he doesn't like food.
Later in the article, spokesvirgin Randy Thomas, an "ex-gay" who is still so grossed out by naked women that he hasn't had a date or sex in at least a decade (the last time was with a man), blatantly lies about Exodus, his ex-gay organization.
"We don't cure people," said Randy Thomas, membership director for Exodus International, which has more than 100 ex-gay ministry chapters nationwide. "The goal is Christ, not a particular orientation."
Maybe Thomas is too busy looking at Internet porn to read his own group's webpage, so I'll remind him that Exodus claims to offer "Freedom From Homosexuality Through The Power of Jesus Christ". Um, sounds like a cure to me, or a deceptive word game to trick clients into thinking they have a chance of becoming heterosexual. And let's not forget Exodus' billboards that scream "The Truth Brought Freedom!"
Clearly, the goal of Exodus is turning people straight, not simply making them Christians. If sexual conversion has nothing to do with the group, what is the point of them existing, when regular churches can handle the task of converting people? Exodus is a scam and Randy Thomas is a liar who spews out so much doublespeak, he probably has a forked tongue.
30 Comments:
Well Focus, Exodus' primary funding source doesn't say "cure" per say. Rather Dobson says:
"reversed" "treated" "reformed" "turn their boys around" (it's ok to snicker at this one) "prevented" "treatable" "permanent change"

As a Christian I am saddened by such things... yes I believe homosexuality is a sin. But it is no different than any other sin. This "Exodus" group seems to be missing the point about what the Bible teaches about sharing the Gospel. It shouldn't be focused on a particular sin BUT should be focused on saving sinners (which we all are). I know former homosexuals just like I know former liars, theives, etc. There is no equation where one plugs in the variables and stops being a homosexual. Deliverance only comes from being born-again (John 3:3) and even then it may still be a struggle BUT again the point is that same struggle exists with ANY sin. Just my two cents...

EX GAY WATCH DISAGREE'S WITH WAYNE! In his blog today, Wayne Besen attacks Brenna Simonds, leader of a small Boston exgay ministry, the name of which he does not give. That ministry's name is is Alive In Christ and is unlucky enough to be based out of a church located a block from the capital building. In Besen's eye by virtue of the fact Simonds ministers to exgays and is located near the capital she is surely involved in anti-gay politicking. Mr. Besen provides no substantiation of these accusations Simonds is politically involved. Googling "Brenna Simonds" turns up little more than mention of her ministerial work and a couple Amazon.com book reviews of rather benign Christian books. I question if Besen's unsubstantiated accusations on Ms. Simonds and inflammatory commentary on Randy Thomas' sex-life later in his post serve any constructive purpose.
All that Wayne said was, "For a person who claims not to care about politics, her prime location sure makes it easy to lobby at a moments notice." This statement is factually correct on its face.
Funny how those "ex-gays" who have found "freedom in Christ" seem to also require freedom from that strong compulsion to visit and monitor this site and others like it. Pure, pure politics.
Sadly, they are twisted, confused, troubled souls. It is also worthwhile to note that those who believe things that defy reality become so frustrated, angry and tormented when someone has the guts to stand up and tell it like it really is.

Yeah so we don't agree with Wayne 100% of the time. Whoopty do. Anyone who cares to analyze our work at ExGayWatch is always welcome to do so. Critique makes one stronger and more effective.

How nice of you to assist us then in becoming "stonger and more effective". How ridiculous.

Yes hun, people concerned with public policy should simply go around saying whatever they want in a vacuum where their ideas can be free from the annoying constraints of peer-review or critique to test those concepts for solvency. That model will defiantly assure only water-tight and coherent ideas emerge from a movement.

As a non-christian atheist, I do not believe in the concept of sin. It saddens me that christians expect non-christians to abide by their doctrine when it is based on nothing more than a belief, not a fact. Many christians believe that someone who is innately gay is sinning against god for who they are. If a creator actually exists, it is against all logic to conclude that creator would create a being that he/she/it didn't want to exist in the first place. That being said, I don't really know the reasons for the existance of an ex-gay ministry other than to exert some sort of societal or political influence. It seems to have become "chic" as of late. I don't find Wayne's comments about any of this farce to be out of line or inflammatory in any way. It pales in comparision to the shit that spews from the "christian" groups. I would just like christians to mind their own business and stay out of mine, it's that simple, you don't bother me, I won't bother you.

Why is there this obsessive hate for us Gays from the "christian" right? Because ONE ALWAYS HATES WHAT ONE WRONGS! More evidence of this is the extreme hatred that white southern "christians" had for black people even before the civil rights movement started. Why? They (African Americans) were meek, powerless, mute and avoided (on pain of death) going into white neighborhoods. So where did all the hate come from? Whites KNEW they were treating blacks like shit and right winger "christians" KNOW that they are doing the same thing to us. And to the I say I say blogger, we DONT CARE what you have to say about homosexuality or anything else! We know you THINK it's a sin, WE DONT!!!! And we've heard it ALL before and DONT BELIEVE that nonsense, So stick your "two cents" and shut the fuck up! It's because of "loving christians" like you that the suicide rate for gay teenagers is so high! THATS the REAL sin!!!! And you and your president and your mammon churches are GUILTY!!! If there is a last judgement before God, you and yours will have a hell of a lot more to answer for than any homosexuals! Gary (NJ)

Well said Gary, my sentiments exactly. Christians need to spend a lot more time on their own "sins". By their own admission, they're not perfect, so why don't they fly at it and correct their own "sins" instead of budding their unwelcome noses in the affairs of others?
