The New York Timesand The Washington Postboth have reports on Harriet Miers' deep evangelical faith and paint a portrait of her as pro-life. If Miers is confirmed, it looks as though Roe v. Wade may be in serious trouble. The articles also hints at opposition to gay rights, quoting her as once saying that her "personal conviction is not consistent" with the "homosexual lifestyle".
I am troubled by a nominee who believes that gay people have "lifestyles", rather than lives. This is particularly disturbing coming from a sixty year old woman who has never been married. Her church is adamantly opposed to pre-marital sex, which means that Miers is a virgin, or she selectively picks and chooses which "lifestyles" are sinful. I continue to keep an open mind on this nomination, but the initial indicators are that Bush may be trying to ram through a stealth nominee.

The more I learn, the more worried I become. Miers may be our worst nightmare.
And I don't care much for the hetero "lifestyle" either, with their innate prejudice, bigotry and moral superiority. Just take a look around you and see how they've fucked up the world and continue ad infinitum. Nothing to be morally superior about if you ask me. The Supreme court is now stacked against us, no question about it. I see civil unrest fomenting.
If Roe is overturned, the one good thing that will come out of it will be a major backlash against the republicans and the right in general. Plus it's a big fund raising issue for them. They're just cynical enough NOT to overturn it.

Yes Robert, we need to bring back the energy and rage of the late 60's and early 70s. Younger gays in particular dont know 'what it was like before Stonewall'. I hope they never have to find out. Gary (NJ)

Maybe it won't be such a bad thing if women aren't legally permitted to hire a "doctor" who murders their unborn baby.
