Crooner George Michael announced that he and his gay, male, homosexual lover will make their relationship official under new British legislation offering gays many of the legal protections available to married couples.
"I'm sure Kenny (Goss) and I will be doing the old legal thing, but we won't be doing the whole veil and gown thing," Michael said at a screening of a documentary about his career. "It'll be relatively soon after it comes in, probably early next year."
I wish them all the best. Its a sad commentary that we in the U.S. are lagging behind the rest of the civilized world. Two states or is it three offering civil unions and one offering marriage with no federal tax rights among others and whose marriages are invalid in the rest of the country, but confined to marital limbo in their own state. Its a national disgrace.
I've said it before; as great as the US is in some ways, in other ways we are EXTREMELY backwards!! And bush and co. are doing all they can to push us back even further into a Charles Dickens age of the few filthy rich and a huge underclass of the working poor, all of the above maintained by the right wing churches. Gary, I agree entirely. It pains me to think that we were once the champions of freedom and human rights, now relegated to possibly one day becoming a pariah nation on civil rights, no thanks to the republicans and a handful of spineless democrats who are afraid to confront the issues, let alone one another. They are nothing but career politicians who really don't give a damn about our rights let alone common decency. We need more courageous people like Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King to lead us, more civil disobedience to get anywhere. We've waited far too long to get what is rightfully ours. Polite exchange and condescending pats on the back from our leaders don't wash any more. As a hardworking taxpayer, I'm sick and tired of the throw-the-dog-a bone attitude on the part of politicians and society alike. Its time to fight back, collectively.
Gary, the RC church is an ardent supporter of this administration and is the reason why it remains silent, payback time for Bush introducing legislation to try to curtail abortion and ban gay marriage, among other civil rights. THEY, the church, is the intrinsic evil in all this, along with all the other rabble of right wing zealots. The moderates among them, what few there are, are afraid to confront them. Its sickening yet so transparent. I truly believe the chickens will come home to roost. The wheel goes around.
It is extremely sad that the United States of America lags behind the modern Western world on Gay Rights. Hell, I never for a moment thought that Spain (a bastion of Roman Catholicism) would recognize Gay Marriage before the US. Who would've guessed.
And not to change the subject - but we are now falling even further behind in the world in the Human Rights arena now that it is known that we are running secret concentration camps in Eastern Europe. I'm exhausted from the frustration and anger that I feel about the direction and tone of our country today everywhere I turn.
Cheers for Geo Michael and partner ... as well as Sir Elton!
"Gay male homosexual lover" is just an inside joke I have with a friend of mine. We use it in the context of how a homophobe might introduce his gay son's boyfriend.
