I have never seen a movie that has inspired such intense interest before. Brokeback Mountain will be a hit, even in the red states. There is a longing to see the movie, causing some people to drive several hours to take a gander. For example, here is an e-mail posted on my website today by "Troy."
"My partner and I will be driving three hours from Indianapolis to Chicago to see this movie next week. We've never done that before. The good news is that my partner's best friend, who is straight, and his wife live there and want to go see it with us. The movie opens here in mid-January, when we likely will see it again."

Call me old fashioned....but homosexual cowboys? I just don't get it.
Yeah Marcia. You're old fashioned. So, I suppose you still believe in Santa too?

Come on Martha--gays are in EVERY walk of life including the NFL, why would cowboys be exempt?! Every heard of gay rodeos? (Which I dont approve of by the way because it's cruelty to animals.)
I was told by a friend that Brokeback Mt is going to be re-released and that a local theater was advertising it in their trailers. There's still hope for people who dont live in metropolitan areas to get a chance to see it.

Call me old-fashioned, Marcia, but closed minds in Texas? How exceedingly typical.
Alot of people like Marcia are ignorant when it comes to gay people.
There are gays in every single walk of life. They run the gambit. There are gay football players, gay soccer players. There are gay hockey clubs and rugby clubs all over the world.
People are born gay - so they run the spectrum.

Considering how well Brokeback is doing in Dallas and even conservative Plano, a lot of Texans do get it, Marcia.

I'm with Marcia. Mainstream straight Americans don't want to see homosexuals unless they are in a hair salon.
Why ruin the cowboy thing? That is the last bastion of machismo. We all know that queer cowboys are a hollywood myth.
Look, you people make good money and live in th big cities. Can't you leave some part of America for white normal males? If you want equal rights, stop trying to shove it down our throats and steal our symbols!
I didn't steal your precious symbol. It is my God-given right to be a cowboy. I'll stop shoving my life in your face at the same time you stop shoving your ignorant concepts of what a cowboy is in our faces.
At least gay cowboys can spell Carhartt correctly.
And, I can introduce you to a lovely lesbian who is a sheriff and does a mighty fine job at bullriding. She is a petite gal but could whip your patsy ass.
Keep clinging onto your stereotypes and you'll get nothing but fantasies to fill your long lonely nights in Butte.
Quit drinking the water from that big hole in the ground there in Butte. I think it is affecting your brain.

Ben you're an asshole. BUT besides that, my partner and I with our gal pal saw this most wonderful and tearful movie this evening and sat in a theater with as many Normal gays as Straight Normal non gay. I watched this movie knowing that the happy ending wasn't going to come and it was reminiscent of my first Gay book by James Baldwin, "Giovonnies (sp) Room." With idiots like Marcia and Ben in the world have we really come any further? I hope so and I hope we get more Love stories between men and men on the screen, with more and more of them with happy endings. Guess I've never gotten over being an idealist sigh

Why are people attacking Ben an Marcia? As GLBTQ Americans we have to learn to respectfully tolerate our opponents. We must meet them with love.
We must remember that they are not evil, but simply misguided. I'm sure in their own way they mean well. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt.
Simon honey, if we bother them so much, why are they reading this blog?! He can go read Dopes R Us.

Simon said: "... respectfully tolerate our opponents."
Tolerate? as in the days of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans? Simon, you probably haven't heard about how life was for gays in the 1960s. You might read up on gay history.
We've had a long history of toleration. Time now for r e s p e c t.

Simon after sixty+ some years of me being tolerant, with my partners from the same generation, I say screw those assholes who refuse to understand and get with the program. It's their turn to start showing tolerance and understanding Not US. There is a ton of information out there to set them on the right path from being Uninformed to Informed! they just refuse to use it and smarten up! So I say screw 'em and their petty, stupid, misguided, narrow mindedness!
So, see Dominick... The Anita-Bryant types never die. They may fade into the background for a while but then they show their ugly bigoted faces again. Like a wart that won't go away.
You would think they would learn from their past. Bigotry has no place in our society. I blame our circumstance of bucking the stereotypes a product of 'don't care' and hillbilly ignorance.
Which was worse: 1) Ms. Bryant or 2) modern-day 21st Century homophobes?
