Ever wonder how a nutjob, yes-man like Samuel Alito rose to a Supreme Court nomination? The New York Timesexplains that it was the result of a scheme by conservatives to infiltrate the judicial system. The goal was to set America back to the 18th Century, before America fully embraced individual rights and to re-create an imperial presidency.
The goals of conservatives are truly anathema to a free and prosperous nation. Before they ruin America, they should ask themselves a tough question: If the judicial system worked so well in the 18th Century, why did America move away from it?
10 Comments:
Astute observers on the left have been saying this for years (it's all about the judges). I hope the people of this nation wake up (as they appear to be slowly doing now), before it's too late; if it isnt already!

I fear that it is too late, which is why I'm researching the feasability of moving to Europe or Canada to transition, and possibly live permanantly. While Alito will be dangerous to gay rights, transgender persons of all stripes (including crossdressers) will be even more in danger due to our transness being publicly visible. When (not if) hate crime protections and non-discrimination ordanaces are challenged and overturned across the country, we will loose our jobs, our homes, and possibly our lives, and the courts will not be there to protect us.
We all need to prepair ourselves to be the targets of hate speech in the coming months. As the GOP poll numbers slag even further, they will declare war on GLBT persons, because they will need a scapegoat to distract their base from the real issues of corruption and cronyism within the GOP. We already are seeing that locally in Pennsylvania, where gay marrage has been targeted as a constitutional ammendment issue. Once hate speech becomes part of the political dialog, that will embolden those who wish to do us physical harm. These are indeed very scary times we live in.

We won't know whether or not it's too late until after we've had the November midterm elections. If the people of this country don't show that they reject George W. Bush and everything he stands for, by giving control of the Congress to the Democratic party, we will simply never be the same again.
We are being taken over by mentally deranged people who think that getting down on their knees and talking into their hands is a good way of getting things done. Government has been infested with people who believe in "demons".
Washington D.C. is overrun by people who actually believe the earth was created in six days by a diety who placed two people in a garden, until a snake came along and ruined everything. We need to run these people off.

Chris, my husband and I are waiting for the outcome of the November mid-term elections before speculating about how bad the future may be.
Miss Cee, you are right that when anti-LBGT initiatives come up for election, actual hate crime assaults increase, and that IS dangerous. We are fighting a marriage amendment here (AZ) too. What I've discovered personally is that our community has much stronger support than it did 10 years ago when I first got involved. I HOPE my personal experience speaks for the rest of the country, and that Americans as a whole will not stand for non-discrimination ordinances to be overturned - we are just now finally getting them passed! I hope you will be proven wrong, Miss Cee, and that we have a safer future than you predict. If not, my friends and I will see ya in Europe - one couple talks of moving to Italy, another to Vienna, another to Canada, and my husband talks of moving to France.
Today I read a poem by an acquaintance who is in his 80s and fled Europe during the 40s - the first line made me cry real tears fearing that this could happen to me and the friends I love:
"Friends - where are you? You are displaced all over the world."
1. Wayne, you said here when he was first nominated that Bush was nominating Mr. Alito out of WEAKNESS...how weak does GWB look now?
2. What if, instead of Bush and Alito being wrong, it is your viewpoint that's genuinely incorrect?

Bush did nominate Alito out of weakness. If you haven't noticed the GOP has a majority in the Senate. Not much to do about that. The only option is a filibuster, and since the GOP has no regard for the rule of law, they will enact the nuclear option.
But how does this equal Bush strength. He has failed on every policy he has put forth. Remmber "social security reform" and Hurricane Katrina rebuilding? Iraq?
Has Bush succeeded in anything? He is one of the worst presidents in the history of America.

So you're inferring that Bush HAD to nominate a conservative because if he hadn't the senate would have rejected the nominee?
No, if Bush hadn't nominated a conservative idealogue, his followers would have gone nuts with indignation and would have anihilated the person. Oh, wait, that's what happened to Harriet Miers, Bush's first choice, which he did not get. That's called being "weak", yes.

Chris, I only hope the mid-term election will result in a thumbs down to Bush, but I don't trust the dumb electorate that voted these clowns in twice. The democrats are nowhere and doing virtually nothing, in fact they've left it too late. I can't see one viable candidate with enough guts to take these fascists on, can you? There aren't any who endorse full equality for starters.
