A majority of Americans (53%) favor the confirmation of federal appeals court judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court and an even larger proportion believe Alito would not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Indeed, only 18 percent say they believe he would vote to overturn the decision.
Here is the catch: A majority of Americans DO NOT want him confirmed if he would overturn Roe.
This leaves me scratching my head. Alito has spent his entire life angling for a way to get onto the Supreme Court so he can specifically overturn Roe v. Wade. Anyone with two brain cells knows this. He has said that he is particularly proud of his work to overturn this precedent.
So, in supporting his nomination the American people are:
a) In denial b) Ignorant c) Just plain shit stupid
Take your pick folks, but if you want the right to choose, you can't be for this obvious extremist who disdains Roe v. Wade with every fiber in his radical, right wing being. I predict if he is confirmed, Roe is doomed.
You heard it here first

The American people are woefully uninformed, to put it politely. A new poll that came out today asserts that only 43% of all Americans can name ONE Supreme Court justice! I am amazed.

I dont want Roe overturned either, but if it is, the only good thing that will come out of it is a *major* backlash against the right and the GOP in general. And yes the American people are woefully ignorant and uninformed, especially since most major news outlets now are controlled by corporations and only offer fluff or right wing bullshit. Unless people seek out accurate news on the web or places like Air America radio, they dont know shit and shit is exactly what they're getting in government. I bet most of the people in that mining town in WV voted for bush; the same administration that let's big business get away with murder (in this case literally). With all the violations that the mining company had, they should have been shut down before all those men died. Alito is definately a corporatist and if a suit against the mining company came before him, we know which way he would rule. Gary (NJ)

Roe is been used to deviate attention from other issues. People are very misinformed, but not because they are stupid, but because the media is controlled, aiming to help everyone understand Roe=Abortion against Presidential powers = ?
No one is discussing what OTHER ISSUES will he support if he get confirmed, and remember folks, Gay Marriage and equal right for sexual minorities is not a battle yet won.
I would like to know the views of this guy on protection at federal level for victims of hate crimes (of any kind) as well as how is he going to manage issues like death penalty.

Yes, but abortion isn't just about abortion - it is about the right to privacy which affects all the other social issues, as well as executive power. After all, if there is no right to privacy, then it is easier to justify bugging and wire tapping.

Yes, Alito does not bode well for the LBGT community whatosever. I have been saying to family and friends for years that we have a very gullible electorate in the U.S., witness the last election result; a majority of voters gave the nod to this fascist inspired regime and we were the scapegoats. As a result, this society has been relegated to backwater status on civil rights and social issues when compared with the rest of the more progressive societies in the west. I'm not hopeful for 2008, the Democrats have nothing better to offer either. Pretty dismal if you ask me. The people get what they deserve.
Is it no wonder the U.S. electorate is so ill-informed when it comes to elections? Its a sad commentary that I have to rely on the BBC in America for important news affecting the U.S. politically and socially and where journalists are journalists not necessarily relying on reading copy. Gary is right, our media networks/stations are controlled by big corporations with a right wing agenda. For one examplt, why do you think we're not seeing body bags coming back from Iraq? The press and media have been muzzled. Alito fits right into the mold. We're in deep trouble.

I strongly recomend folks around here to watch "The News Hour" on PBS, everyday, the team of journalists leadered by Jim Leahrer, Margaret Warner, Gwen Ifill, Ray Suarez and Jeffrey Brown, is -by far- the most -if not the ONLY- respected team of SERIOUS journalists that give a real scoop of the national and international situation. It is about the ONLY news show that I watch, since all the others are so very corrupted by the system.
"larger proportion believe Alito would not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade"
How soon Americans forget. History repeats its self. It took only one woman to make big changes in this country. One atheist woman Madalyn Murray O'hair. Remember her? No one thought she could pull off what she aimed in doing and they poo pooed her, paid her no attention. Well folks she did it and so will Alito if he gets a seat on that all important bench! He will turn back Roe v Wade he will destroy Gays, he will support an imperial presidency and so much more!
You need to Call your Senators today and ask that they filibuster the Alito nomination. It only takes a few minutes to make your views known on such a critical issue and they must hear from you.
To hell with Frist and his threat of a Nuclear war (or whatever the hell he calls it)
