(Weekly Column)

When a gay friend found out that NBC was canceling Will & Grace he was ecstatic. He derisively called the show "Will & Disgrace" and compared it to a minstrel show because the effeminate homosexual "Jack," played by Sean Hayes, is consistently the butt of jokes. He is right that Jack is often the punch line, but I think historically this sitcom will go down as a knockout success for the gay community.

Will & Grace isn't perfect, but it came along at the perfect time and bailed gay America out of potential primetime disaster. Ellen had recently come out and her show quickly collapsed. Many critics blamed the gay content for its demise, and even lesbian activist Chastity Bono told Daily Variety that "Ellen" was "too gay."

There was a real danger that the lesson network executives might have taken from Ellen was that mainstream audiences would not accept gay lead characters. Into this political and cultural minefield stepped Will & Grace. Thankfully, it was timely, unquestionably funny and proved that largely straight audiences can embrace gay subject matter. Where would we be today without this show rising like a phoenix from the ashes of Ellen?

Nonetheless, Will's (Eric McCormack) moribund sex life continues to irritate gay people. The man is obviously attractive and successful, yet he fritters away his Saturday nights with Grace (Debra Messing), whining about men he would surely get, if he would just lose her. I'll be the first to admit that I'd like to see the last episode (May 18) end with the perennially frustrated Will cruising a seedy leather bar and leaving at 3am in a drunken stupor with a shirtless and tattooed guy named Spike.

The pragmatist in me, however, realizes that explicit sexuality isn't what this show is about. Will & Grace introduced gay people to millions of Americans and brought us into their living rooms. Instead of deriding Will & Grace, the gay community owes David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, the show's co-creators and executive producers, a debt of gratitude. They made it possible for the networks to take gay-themed shows seriously.

While criticisms of the show are valid, they also are made in a vacuum, which overlooks the historical time period of the show. It seems programming that features minorities always begins with stereotypes, before the group branches out to more complex archetypes.

Let's remember that before Denzel Washington could become a superstar, America had to endure less threatening African Americans such as Jimmie Walker, who played JJ on the sitcom Good Times, and liked to mindlessly shout "Dynamite" in his Chicago housing project.

In a similar fashion, the gay characters in Will & Grace ingratiated themselves with Americans who were otherwise fearful of homosexuality. This has led to increasing cultural comfort and opened the door for more realistic portrayals of gays and lesbians.

For example, Desperate Housewives, a phenomenally popular sitcom particularly beloved in the so-called Red States, has a complex gay teenage character. On NBC's Book of Daniel, the preacher has a gay son. And, of course, the remarkable success of Brokeback Mountain will only lead to more gay-themed shows.

Still, there is a long way to go before gay people are afforded equality in Hollywood. ABC television network recently cancelled the reality series "Welcome to the Neighborhood," where neighbors got to choose from competing families to see who would be invited to move into a subdivision.

After a gay couple with children was selected, the show was mysteriously pulled. ABC claims that the gay winners had nothing to do with their decision. Yet, critics point out that the network was wooing Evangelical Christians to support their wildly profitable "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

Sadly, "Welcome to the Neighborhood" was exactly what America needs to see. Even Jim Stewart, who in an early episode said, "I would not tolerate a homosexual couple moving into this neighborhood" came around. It turns out that he had a gay son and the show helped him reconcile the strained relationship.

"I'd say to ABC, 'Start showing this right now,' " Mr. Stewart told The New York Times. "It has a message that needs to be heard by everyone."

The lesson of the unseen ABC reality show highlights the reason Will & Grace was so instrumental: Once you allow gay families into your living room, they are inevitably accepted into the neighborhood of shared humanity.

Will & Grace may be past its prime, but it did set the stage for a primetime line-up that includes ever-evolving gay shows and characters.

I think the show was an abomination. The way they denied Will sex and made Jack into a limp-wristed circus freak. Please, give me a break. It was one step above Queer Eye for the Faggy Guy. These shows make me embarrassed to be a homosexual.

I was right there with you until you got on the Ellen subject.

Ewwww...I don't mind fence-straddlers, but I wish they weren't so blatant.

I have not forgiven Ellen for her comments on the Larry King show in which she claimed to be a "good person, not an activist."

And Chastity Bono needs her cute little butt spanked for saying that Ellen was "too gay." Puhleez. Where is Ms. Chastity these days? I think Ellen, with all her warts, is doing much better than Ms. Bono. I haven't seen her around in *any* circles lately.

Whatever.

I do agree with you, Wayne, that Will and Grace must be viewed in historical context. It is/was a trailblazer in many ways.

That a show about openly gay men is accepted before a show about an open lesbian is not at all surprising. We have been the "invisible queers" for most of my life.

White men first, you know.

Great show with a terrific cast ensemble. One of the bottom lines for future Gay themed shows is sponsors! Money talks.

Now for you Scott, to bad for you BUT there are just as many "JACKS" in the world with their limp wrist who don't think their circus freaks and I happen to be one of those guys! I saw Jack very humorous and enlightning and I saw Will NOT being denied sex but "choices" he made. If they gave him sex partners we'd be watching a Gay version of Charlie Sheens program, HOW boring!

These shows don't make you embarrased to be a homosexual Scott, you do that just fine to yourself!

"The book of Daniel" might not be the best comparison to make, Wayne.

It's got a gay son, all right, of a foul-mouthed, pill-popping episcopal minister with an alcoholic wife, a daughter who sells pot and another son who (like his father?) is a philanderer.

Sure, the gay son, like most of today's TV shows, is portrayed as the only normal member of the family...I don't know though...it's as if in a backhanded way the show producers are equating Vicodin-popping, alcoholism, pot-dealing, philandering and "gay" as character devices, and something's strange about that.

I thought the show was really funny. The last thing we need is more Queer as Folk type of shows where there is overt, steamy sexuality.

How will straight America accept us if we keep shoving our sexuality in their faces?

I really Enjoy Will & Grace and watch them everyday, I will Miss them. I hope all thier seasons are on dvd. I think one reason why Will is a little more conservitive then Jack is to show that we are all diverse in our own ways, I myself am more like Will But I really enjoy Jack's humer, it makes me laugh on days when the real world is so serious. I will Miss them.

Miss Chasity is currently on Celeberty Fit Club where her cute little ass is far from little _LOL!

Will and Grace is a funny show, my biggest complaint is that Will never found Mr Right-that was always his goal on the show. After several seasons of him whinning about it and not finding anyone to stick aroung longer than a few weeks, it did get old. Since the show is accepted and has had a large audience, the writers needed Will to find Mr Right. As far as Jack goes, he will always be looking for Mr Right now and thats OK.
I still watch the show faithfully, not just becuase of gay characters, but because most of the newer stuff sucks!

I watched five minutes of a Will and Grace episode when it was in its first season. I was disgusted and offended by the character Jack, and I never watched the show again. Objectively speaking, I agree with Scott from Las Vegas. The show was an abomination. I felt the same way about the movie, "The Birdcage", too.

Having said all of that, Wayne happens to be right that the show wasn't done in a vacuum. The acceptance of gay persons by Americans would indeed be expected to take such a route. It is entirely unsurprising that Americans would be more initially comfortable with a gay person when his character was set against a comedic, almost absurd background.

I take your point Wayne t some extent, though I stopped watching the show long ago. It would have been a positive step if the writers had depicted Will in a longterm relationship with that extremely attractive Bobby Cannavale, but instead chose to stereotype our relationships by having his relationship fail, as if we're incapable of sustaining any semblance of meaningful and fulfilling relationships in the first place. Its bad enough that the right wing fundies are mouthing off about our "unstable" liaisons with multiple partners. Grace's marriage (to Harry Connick) however or failure was treated in an entirely different manner. A bit of hypocrisy I think.

I love when people like "Jake" from Tex-ass post here, because it gives us gay and lesbian people exactly what we need: a clear picture of the ignorant, uneducated hillybilly who still refer to gay people as "queers" in between shifts at the local mill.

Take heart and react with joy, my educated, erudite friends, for the gay rights movement could NEVER have come this far without people like Jake. THANK YOU, Jake, for you have helped the gay rights movement more than you'll ever know! :-)

It's a sitcom. Don't you find that most characters on sitcoms are one-dimensional stereotypes? Granted, writing is getting better, but for the most part, they're trying to pander to the broadest base possible and make the show both entertaining and relatable.

I think Will and Grace is sometimes really very funny. Its got some of the same wicked, broad charactature humor as AbFab at times. Bitchy, vain characters who don't even worry about reality.

People criticize the characters for not having more successful relationships, but if think about that, what is funny about happy people in well-adjusted situations?

I think most good comedy happens because the main characters are trying REALLY hard to have a good life but they're really losers. Cheers, Friends, etc. The characters were cute, but really they were losers and that's the funny stuff.

Will has had dates and relationships and some successes and some failures and they still had some funny stuff in all of that.

I have watched King of Queens sometimes, Everyone Loves Raymond, etc. Will & Grace had many more groundbreaking and funny moments.

Sorry that some guys didn't like it, but its just one tv show. It can't be all things to all people and the fact that its lasted this long should be seen as a success considering that "Some of My Best Friends" based on the film "Kiss Me Guido" lasted only one season.

And don't forget how hard it is to even get a tv show made into a pilot, let alone one full season. And Will and Grace lasted eight seasons. They should be congratulated for their efforts, not beaten up by someone who watched 5 minutes of one episode and then wrote them off.

It blows people's minds when we say there are gay people who don't fit your stereotypical gay image.

We had a computer store retailer whose homophobic owner was in the process of making a commercial for his stores.

He didn't think they were recording his off-the-cuff remarks but somebody in the studio was and the MP3 version made to the internet.

He laughed as he was spoofing democrats and said about gay rodeos: "What the HELL is up with that" ((chuckle chuckle))

If only I could strangle his stereotypical pencil neck! (With one hand, no less)

What's disgusting is your ignorance. The cancellation of "Daniel" isn't Gods will but ignorance like yours and wanting to be a control freak not thinking people can make their own choices.

You seem to forget Athiest and Agnostics don't care for your petty shit, but they do know what's good to watch and should be able to make their own decision as well as the rest of us. I think the show was great, I completely agree with Wayne. I think it was empowering in a sense.

The thing is, Jack isn't an idiot because he's gay, he's an idiot because he's...Jack.

There are much worse portrayals of gay people out there. Think of Christopher Guest. I cringe when I think of that Waiting for Guffman movie, or Best in Show.

Let's take this one piece at a time:

"Can someone help me understand why a man would want to enter another man?"

Same reason you would want to enter your wife. These two men love each other and want to express that love. It is no different from a heterosexual couple expressing their love.

"The Bible is against this and God detests it, plus it is disgusting."

Guess what? I don't believe in God! What are you going to do now? Why do I have to listen to an entity I don't believe exists?

"The cancellation of this show is God's will. God's people are making a comeback across the globe. We will win and the sodomites will lose."

Actually, the cancellation of this show is "God's people" being obnoxious, nosy crybabies.

I can't address Will and Grace specifically because I've only seen about 10 minutes of one episode (not much of a TV watcher). But I will say with regard to Wayne's statement about the show as an incremental step forward. . .well yeah, sorta, but!

Entertainment media have had limp-wristed, sexless gay male characterizations for generations. More to the point now would be WHY haven't the media progressed much beyond that?
What bothers me about shows like Queer Eye is not so much the fact that gay men are portrayed as cooing interior decorators, but the fact that this sort of portrayal is basically ALL we have to see (among mainstream media). Our community is so much more diverse than just that one personality "type" and now that we have a civil rights movement 35 years old, we are overdue to have moved beyond only that kind of portrayal.

What has happened to TV in the last generation? One of the few sitcoms I *have* watched is re-runs of All in the Family - that show is 30-plus years old and it takes on social issues that the networks run screaming from in fear, now. Saw a re-run of All in the Family a week or so ago and Archie Bunker makes some nasty remark about co-habiting straight couples acting like "fags," and Edith Bunker says, "Oh no Archie, I read in the news that *they* are getting married now." That show aired before I was born. WHY are we still in the same place, having the same arguments without much demonstrable progress, now??

Susie: I saw your comments and thought of this report. The present GOP regime has not changed much since the Nixon Days ... (Nixon talking about Gays and Archie Bunker)

ALL THE PHILOSOPHER KING'S MEN.(President Richard Nixon, John D. Ehrlichman, and H. R. Haldeman)(Brief Article)
Harper's Magazine, Feb, 2000, by James Warren

From a May 13, 1971, conversation among President Richard Nixon, John D. Ehrlichman, and H. R. Haldeman. On October 5, 1999, the National Archives made available to the public 445 hours of previously unreleased Oval Office tapes. The following dialogue was transcribed by Chicago Tribune reporter James Warren.

(Transcript SNIP)

NIXON: ... CBS ... glorifying homosexuality.

EHRLICHMAN: A panel show?

H. R. HALDEMAN: No, it's a regular show. It's on every week. It's usually just done in the guy's home. It's usually just that guy, who's a hard hat.

NIXON: That's right; he's a hard hat.

EHRLICHMAN: He always looks like a slob.

NIXON: Looks like Jackie Gleason.

HALDEMAN: He has this hippie son-in-law, and usually the general trend is to downgrade him and upgrade the son-in-law--make the square hard hat out to be bad. But a few weeks ago, they had one in which the guy, the son-in-law, wrote a letter to you, President Nixon, to raise hell about something. And the guy said, "You will not write that letter from my home!" Then said, "I'm going to write President Nixon," took off all those sloppy clothes, shaved, and went to his desk and got ready to write his letter to President Nixon. And apparently it was a good episode.

EHRLICHMAN: What's it called?

NIXON: "Archie's Guys." Archie is sitting here with his hippie son-in-law, married to the screwball daughter. The son-in-law apparently goes both ways. This guy. He's obviously queer--wears an ascot--but not offensively so. Very clever. Uses nice language. Shows pictures of his parents. And so Arch goes down to the bar. Sees his best friend, who used to play professional football. Virile, strong, this and that. Then the fairy comes into the bar.

I don't mind the homosexuality. I understand it. Nevertheless, goddamn, I don't think you glorify it on public television, homosexuality, even more than you glorify whores. We all know we have weaknesses. But, goddammit, what do you think that does to kids? You know what happened to the Greeks! Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure, Aristotle was a homo. We all know that. So was Socrates.

EHRLICHMAN: But he never had the influence television had.

NIXON: You know what happened to the Romans? The last six Roman emperors were fags. Neither in a public way. You know what happened to the popes? They were layin' the nuns; that's been goin' on for years, centuries. But the Catholic Church went to hell three or four centuries ago. It was homosexual, and it had to be cleaned out. That's what's happened to Britain. It happened earlier to France.

Let's look at the strong societies. The Russians. Goddamn, they root 'em out. They don't let 'em around at all. I don't know what they do with them. Look at this country. You think the Russians allow dope? Homosexuality, dope, immorality, are the enemies of strong societies. That's why the Communists and left-wingers are clinging to one another. They're trying to destroy us. I know Moynihan will disagree with this, [Attorney General John] Mitchell will, and Garment will. But, goddamn, we have to stand up to this.

EHRLICHMAN: It's fatal liberality.

(TRANSCRIPT SNIP)

I agree with your assessment that Sometimes its seems we're going backwards rather than forwards.

Honestly, Will & Grace was, and still is, one of my favourite shows. Being a lesbian teenager in these modern days, it really made me realize that it's a normal thing.

Jack, of course, was an amazing characte rin my eyes, because he was such a stereotype.
Sure, it was pretty awful, but don't most sitcoms consist of at least ONE stereotypical character?

I have a few friends who are FLAMING like Jack.
