Brokeback Mountain received eight nominations, including best movie, best director for Ang Lee, and best supporting actor for Ledger's on-screen lover, Jake Gyllenhaal. This has left anti-gay activists angry and bitter.
"It's a sad day for American when a small group of very determined activists are dominating the awards ceremony," said Janice Crouse, the senior fellow at the Beverly LaHaye Institute, a think tank associated with the Concerned Women for America.
These right wing groups know that Brokeback Mountain threatens their misinformation campaign and their fundraising though fear. They are terrified that Americans will no longer be ignorant of homosexuality and fall for their propaganda.
All I can do is laugh at these backwards people and state the obvious: The success of Brokback Mountain must be God's will.

Beverly LaHATE and her husband both have those pinched looking bitchy faces--reflecting their true inner selves. Wouldnt it be nice if these 'christians' spent all this time, energy and money helping the poor, hungry, sick and downtrodden as their Lord commanded them to, instead of this pathological obsession they have with gay people. And Wayne, right-wing think-tank is a total oxymoron. Gary (NJ)

As bad as it seems and as painful as it is to watch other more progressive nations bestowing equality rights on their LGBT communities while we continue to suffer and languish, the right wing bigots here in the U.S. know deep down they are gradually losing the cultural war which of course translates into less money in their coffers, less influence, and more importantly, less power. Its a natural reflect action to something that is inevitable, i.e. their eventual demise, later rather than sooner. They can rant and rave all they want. If the republicans lose the 2008 election, it will only hasten the process. Their days are numbered and they know it.
There's no doubt that they are losing the culture war. And they're losing it with both houses of congress and the presidency in their pocket. During their reign, gay marriage became a possibility (and a reality in MASS), all sodomy laws were declared invalid, and yep, it looks like this year's "best picture" may well go to a movie about two gay cowboys in love. All we have to do is stay the course. The truth is on our side. Scripture admonishes fundamentalists to "be separate" from the world. I wish they would go ahead and separate already!

Frankly, I'm wondering how watched this Oscars ceremony is going to be.
With a few exceptions, it's a WEIRD list of films and performances.
I think the culture wars are over and the right wing has lost. Sure, there will be many battles and lots of screeching from the right, but the tide of history is washing over them. The signs are everywere. Beyond the Oscar nominations, Brokeback is becoming a mainstream hit all over America. Poll after poll indicates that younger Americans have no problem with gay equality. In just a few years, civil unions have gone from a radical idea to the moderate position. When they came to Conn., hardly anyone outside the state noticed. It's amazing.

Civil rights are slow to evolve. We have history to tell us that. I, too, see an ebb of change happening. Positive change.
But, do not, I repeat, do NOT let your guard down. There will be bigotry for a long long time. Even when you work at a business that gives domestic partner benefits there are still bigots who work next to you. Just be wary.

Sam, I agree. I have a cousin in the UK who said that when the new Civil Partnership law was enacted there in December 2005, there was hardly a blink, not even much from the church which even allows its clergy to form unions. This law was overwhelmingly supported by both sides of Parliament. It bodes well for the eventual mergence of these unions into full marriage recognition with is what they really are, ditto Connecticut, Vermont. Stonewall UK thinks that eventually it will be merged into the marriage act, eventually. There is one judge in the UK Supreme Court, Judge Hale (a female) who has already proposed extending full marriage recognition to same sex-couples. Its going to come, and again we're still languishing with one or two states recognizing our unions. Its appalling to see how we've regressed compared to other nations.
I see the current buzz here on WayneBlog appears to be upbeat and positive ... and considering word on the web is that the anti-Gay initiative in Florida failed to get enough signatures to get on the ballot (this election cycle anyway).
So - I'll go with y'all on it.
But lets not forget there are currently 18 states with constitutional amendments against gay marriage.
Our work ain't done yet boys! Still plenty of windmills yet to joust in the this culture war.
Beverly LaHaye...yeah, isn't her son one of those gay people I've heard about on television?
I didn't like "Brokeback Mountain" at all (and this comes from a gay man), but I do like the fact that it's getting awards and nominations if only because it sends the Religious Reich into Holy Conniptions and reveals them for the hateful lot they are. I suppose to be a Christian these days you don't actually have to follow the teachings of that Jesus guy at all. You know, "love one another", "judge not lest ye be judged", "the meek shall inherit the earth." Hatred of gays is all that's required. Maybe they'll make it a new sacrament.
Johnny, phyllis schlafly has a gay son; i'm think the Lahays gave birth to Chucky. I love your term religious reich--we'll have to start using it--it's more clever than christian taliban.

Anonymous, both Schafly AND LaHaye have gay sons. In fact, LaHaye's son is gay AND is the chief financial officer of Concerned Women for America.
