Here is a big surprise: Iraqi militia men have defied a curfew. We've told them to stop blowing up soldiers and killing each other and they have ignored us. But we think they are going to go to their rooms because we tell them to do so?

At least 36 people have been killed across Iraq today as the authorities struggle to contain sectarian violence in which at least 165 have died this week.

Fascinating story by Victor Davis Hanson yesterday on what an "odd" war this is...

Yeah, just two days ago they asked President Dumbfuck what he thought about what was happening in Iraq. The idiot answered, "I'm optimistic". He is such an asshole.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 2/25/2006 2:04 PM

Chris, maybe here's a reason he was optimistic - sounds like there are some key Iraqis on both sides who say there will be no "civil war", much as some (including some GWB-haters) would love there to be...

Are you guys just junior high kids with too much time on your hands around the school library internet connection?

It was me who posted the link (I forgot to put my name) and it wasn't the National Review which posted the "no civil war" link, it was The Australian newspaper.

Some of you need to get some serious help...I honestly believe you love seeing innocent people in Iraq killed if (and only if) it makes George W. Bush look bad.

kurt, you're as confused and full of shit as your Führer bush, i clicked on the victor davis hanson link which YOU posted and YES it did go right to the national review's website like i said, NOT an australian newspaper. Go rim the dingleberries out of bush's mass murdering stanky ho ass and quit pointing the finger at us. You have a fuckin hell of a nerve saying we WANT civil war there just to make that chimp in the oval office look bad. He already looks bad enough and is a total failure as a president and has a human being; he has brought us nothing but shame and embarrasement to this nation. He wanted this war all along and LIED us into it all the way.
This is HIS war which i'm sure you supported, not us.
You self hating closet cases who lick the boots of your oppressors make me puke. Go blog somewhere else.

In Response to
Kurt W, at 2/25/2006 2:00 PM

Kurt W:

I have been opposed to the invasion of Iraq since Day 1. To refresh my anti-war talking points *pre-invasion* -- Saddam Hussein was contained and not our immediate threat, there was no proof that he had a working nuclear program or WMD, there was no connection between the attacks on 911 and Iraq ... and we have no *real* universal coalition that backs regime change in Iraq therefore we should not go it alone.

Althought there was substantial evidence that Saddam was a ruthless dictator to be sure - but certainly not the only one in the middle east or the world for that matter. Is it our policy to overthrown all ruthless dictators? Is this really the job of the US military?

It has been documented that Bush intended to invade Iraq even before the attacks on 911 as demonstrated here and outlined here by Bush apologist and insider Bob Woodward here Bush had a hard-on for Saddam before ever being *appointed* POTUS.

The Bush administration's own propaganda left many American's believing that Saddam himself was involved in the attacks on 911. Again illustrated here. The hawks in Washington continued to link Saddam and 911 until it was firmly entrenched - sadly in the minds of 70% of Americans. Bush only recently acknowledged that there was no credible link between Saddam and 911 -- but this after years of repeating the lie and gaining support for reelection for being tough on terror.

No Kurt - those of us who have been anti-Iraq war from Day 1 were never taken in by the lies and propaganda of this administration. We have stood firm in our opposition and have pointed out the inconsistencies and bold faced lies that Bush has told with regard to Iraq.

Just keep in mind - when you find yourself appologizing for the traitor President ... this was his war. He wanted it. He forced it. He got it. This abomination is Mr. Bush's legacy. The blood of innocents is on his hands along with every congressperson who was complicit and offered this POTUS a blank check in the name of security.

No one relishes his mistake - because we are all going to suffer for it together - whether we *went along* or not.

Paul, let's put aside the list of people besides GWB who said Saddam was developing WMDs and had to be stopped.

Where does the anti-Bush side have a coherent plan to combat terrorism? In the 2004 election, John Kerry's secret "plan", whenever we got any details of it, was like GWB's.

Think Hillary Clinton will do a better job of stopping terror?

Wayne Besen recently said we may have to take out Iran's nuclear capabilities (and remember, they've hated us for decades, and are a much bigger and more rugged country than Iraq). Where does the anti-Bush side have a plan to do this effectively?

Meanwhile, politically, GWB and his allies beat you and beat you and beat you, ad infinitum.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, sir...whenever those who share the views of pretty much every anti-GWB person I've seen get into power, I'm afraid more GLBT people (and people in general) worldwide will suffer than ever before.

Reason being? I don't see that much evidence that you have a genuine clue as to how the world works. And evil people will always find a way to exploit that, sadly.

KW:

First, let me clarify this fact for you ... I never opposed the actions that our government took in Afghanistan to contain the Taliban and root out Osama and his Al Qeida cohorts. This was a proper action to take following the 911 attack on the US. I believe we've neglected this front as well as the stability of Pakistan because of Bush's folly in Iraq and it has been reported that we let Osama slither away on more than one occasion in this region. and again here. Many who have opposed the Iraqi War, myself included, support efforts to combat militant Islamofascism in its various forms most specifically by targeting the agents of Al Qeida and those that harbor and fund them. And I repeat, even Bush has conceded that his attempts to link Iraq to the attacks of 911 were disingenuous.

But lets take examine these statements -

**********
"I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our overextended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the President started this thing, and there still is no plan today"
-Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

"My job as majority leader is be supportive of our troops, try to have input as decisions are made and to look at those decisions after they're made ... not to march in lock step with everything the president decides to do."
-Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

For us to call this a victory and to commend the President of the United States as the Commander in Chief showing great leadership in Operation Allied Force is a farce"
-Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

Bombing a sovereign nation for ill-defined reasons with vague objectives undermines the American stature in the world. The international respect and trust for America has diminished every time we casually let the bombs fly."
-Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

"I had doubts about the bombing campaign from the beginning...I didn't think we had done enough in the diplomatic area."
-Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

"You can support the troops but not the president"
-Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

"Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?"
-Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/6/99

"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is."
-Governor George W. Bush (R-TX)

"It is a remarkable spectacle to see the Clinton Administration and NATO taking over from the Soviet Union the role of sponsoring "wars of national liberation."
-Representative Helen Chenoweth (R-ID)

"No goal, no objective, not until we have those things and a compelling case is made, then I say, back out of it, because innocent people are going to die for nothing. That's why I'm against it."
-Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/5/99

**********

These statements were made about President Clinton - regarding the US efforts in Kosovo. Interesting to compare these with the reality in 2006.

You are on a fool's errand if you think that the GOP is the only *party* capable of handling national security or holding the title of Commander in Chief. The real tragedy is that Bush's folly in Iraq is severely weakening our military and our nation's ability to combat real threats.

While you continue to suckle the teat of our Traitor-in-Chief ... the tide is turning.

Kurt W.: How dare you say that we would like to see innocent people killed if it would hurt George W. Bush! You should be ashamed! It isn't our side that started this assinine war! It isn't the Democratic party who panders to lower middle class fears to get the southern white vote and then, after election day, sends them off to die! Your comment was repugnant and you owe this board an apology. George W. Bush is an abomination, but that doesn't mean we want to see any Americans killed. How ridiculous.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 2/26/2006 12:46 PM

Chris L., I wish I didn't believe it, but I'm afraid I do for some.

If the big breaking story tomorrow on all major networks was: "American forces capture Bin Laden - Al Qaida offers general surrender", I'm afraid there are some here (and they're far from limited here by any means) who, from their past words, would say: "D*** it!"

(It's much the same way, I'm afraid, as the "Brokeback Mountain" effect. A hidden message of that movie, sadly, is "for true love to flourish, some families have to die".

In other threads here, posters have expressed sadness for any man who has said he's an ex-gay, married, had children, then left his family for a man. I'm sure there are some here who honestly are sad when this happens.

But again, given words I've seen here and elsewhere, I'm afraid there are other people who when seeing such sad situations say internally: "YEAH! That marriage FAILED! Take THAT, Focus on the family! Take THAT, Exodus! WE won! YOU and your stupid viewpoint LOST! Ours WON!" Again, I wish I could believe otherwise.)

When you translate this viewpoint into political terms, many of these people DO NOT want GWB, who they perceive as against them (and again, this is not limited to some on this board or even GLBT people), to succeed in anything of significance.

Chris, as incompetent as you say GWB is, there should be SCADS of people ready to run to lead this country, to offer it something better.

People love to be INSPIRED, not maligned.

(Just, to get back to ex-gay terms, as some people are inspired by those who can and did leave homosexuality even in the face of hardship more than they are to just give into their attractions.)

How in this next election is your side going to inspire people that America can both grow and turn back terror, other than saying "Our candidate is NOT George W. Bush"? Who is a candidate espousing such a message right now?
