Capitol Hill is still at a full-boil because of Sen. Russ Feingold's (D-Wisc.) resolution to censure George W. Bush for what he says is a clear violation of a federal statute regulating domestic surveillance.
Feingold's resolution, formally introduced Monday, would censure Bush for approving an "illegal program to spy on American citizens on American soil." The senator's intention was to refer the matter to the Judiciary Committee for hearings and a vote before consideration by the full Senate. Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) tried to force an immediate vote, to put the Democrats on the spot, but Democratic leaders objected, and for now the censure measure appears to be stalled.
What a shame the Democrats did not take this opportunity to bolster their credentials on national security and take a stand against Bush's illegal surveillance shenanigans.
"We have a great case that they have done a poor job of fighting the war against terrorism," Feingold said of the Republicans in an interview yesterday. "We need a different strategy, one that shows we stand for something."
Feingold would make a damn good president. He is one to watch as the primaries get closer.

Finally, a Democrat who's not trying to be Republican lite. Russ Feingold is the only Democrat I could consider voting for right now.

Feingold ran out of the senate yesterday rather than face Arlen Specter.
If that's all the fight Democrats will have in them in 2008, get ready for a republican president to replace GWB.

If Finegold was serious about his resolution, he should have lined up Democratic support before introducing it. He didn't to that. It is standard practice. All he did was make himself look good and the rest of the Democrats bad.

Nice Wall Street Journal editorial on this - they WANT this in the open...Terry McAuliffe said this is going to be the democrats strategy:
"Which brings us back to Mr. Feingold's public service in floating his "censure" gambit now. He's doing voters a favor by telling them before November's election just how Democrats intend to treat a wartime President if they take power.
Not only do they want to block his policies, they also plan to rebuke and embarrass him in front of the world and America's enemies. And they want to do so not because there is a smidgen of evidence that he's abused his office or lied under oath, but because they think he's been too energetic in using his powers to defend America. By all means, let's have this impeachment debate before the election, so voters can know what's really at stake."
