A Senate committee approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage Thursday, after a shouting match that ended when one Democrat strode out and the Republican chairman bid him "good riddance."

"I don't need to be lectured by you. You are no more a protector of the Constitution than am I," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., shouted after Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record) declared his opposition to the amendment, his affinity for the Constitution and his intention to leave the meeting.

"If you want to leave, good riddance," Specter finished.

"I've enjoyed your lecture, too, Mr. Chairman," replied Feingold, D-Wis., who is considering a run for president in 2008. "See ya."

Isn't it nice to have a senator who stands up for what is right and just?

These FMA thugs will go down in history the same way pro-slavery, pro-segregationists have. This is just another cynical election year ploy from the republikkkans. This hateful amendment has no chance of passing anymore this time than it did the last time and any honest person knows that. Shame on Arlen Specter! Thank God for Russ Feingold!!

Yes, these FMA people are just trash. I bet half of them who feel forced to vote for it by their constituents don't even support the thing in private. Let's tell it like it is here. Imagine an amendment which said, "Jews can't marry." It's a shame that too many people in this great country are too ignorant to make the conenction. This amendment will go down in flames. It is an embarrassment.

I think more and more people are getting the Main idea across to them and that's Civil Rights are being trampled on as well as our religious right, but it's not a religious right issue as the ignorant Religous Right groups want to get across!!

AND YES it's about time Russ Feingold is standing up and speaking out for us. Whoever runs, it would be a great idea if they have a ton of Progressive Clergy who can stand up and fight the claims these asshole RR right clergy make during campaigns and debates!

Russ Feingold has stood up for gays before. He spoke out recently against the proposed amendment to the Wisconsin state constitution.

Feingold's political courage is matched by few Congessional Dems today. Feingold would make an excellent candidate for president in 2008.

Wayne,

Your comments suggest that Specter supports the FMA. Arlen Specter is on record as being against the FMA. He says that he just thinks it deserves a floor vote - where he'll vote "no" - so he voted it out of committee.

I think that his vote really relates more to the battle when the hard-core right-wing fringe wanted to throw him off as the chairman to Judiciary. I suspect that he brokered a deal where he would keep his position and in exchange would allow FMA to leave committee and would not hold votes on Judiciary nominees in committee. While that kinda sucks, I'd rather have Specter the chairman of Judiciary than have him replaced by someone like Sam Brownback.

With most of the Democrats voting against FMA along with McCain, Specter, Chaffee, Collins, Snowe and Sununu (and maybe even a few other states-rights guys) this amendment has no chance whatsoever of passing.

In '04, the vote was 48-50 (Kerry and Edwards did not vote). Actually, the '04 vote was to end the Democrat fillibuster (unsuccessful) so there has been no real vote on the amendment in the Senate. Some, like Specter, voted for cloture but oppose the amendment. In other words, they voted yes to try and end the fillibuster but would vote no on the amendment. It's hard to guess how many.

This year there probably will be a vote and the FMA will probably get around 50 to 52 "yes" votes, but that is far less than the 67 it needs to pass.
