Opponents of the abortion pill RU-486 are mounting a renewed campaign to force the Food and Drug Administration to pull the drug from the market, arguing that it has proved to be unexpectedly dangerous to women.
The sad fact is, this has nothing to do with stopping abortions or womens' health and everything to do with a puritanical war on women and contraceptives. The extreme right hates sex more than they dislike abortions and this is why they are attacking RU-486. These neo-puritans want to create unnecessary "consequences" for sex, because they are dysfunctional and find pleasure anathema to their rigid beliefs.
Indeed, fundamentalism has become a risk factor for STD's and increased abortions. The nations that have the toughest anti-abortion laws, for example, have the most abortions. The countries that preach abstinence-only, have higher STD rates. This is because the right wing's choice of ignorance over education always produces disastrous results.

Poor, barefoot and pregnant; completely controlled by church, state and husband--this is a woman's only role in the world if the radical right gets it's way! We're already falling way behind in education, science and industry. The right wing knows only one direction--RETROGRADE!

it is so sad. on one hand, if you don't want the consequences of STD's or children the answer is simple - do not have sex. But the truth is you can't control people's behavior. Making abortion, sexual activity etc. illegal only adds to the problems when they must go underground and go unregulated by health officials. PEOPLE DIE anyhow. it is just so sad.

I agree with much of what has been said but disagree on one point. First the agreement:
"Nor have they opened their homes to multitudes of needy children. Especially those of color."
It's no secret that if you are trying to place a mixed-race child, especially if they were born HIV positive or drug addicted, about the only chance you have of getting this child a home is with a gay couple. And while Dobson would never adopt such a child, he'll fight tooth and toenail to make sure that gay couples can't either. That goes beyond cruel and callous and borders on evil.
Also, it is clear that the religious right considers gay rights and abortion to be but battles in their culture war to return to puritanism. I am hoping that the 80% or so of the population that would be negatively impacted by the society these nuts would create will wake up and realize that if they don't fight for gay equality then they will be force to fight for the right to wear a swimsuit or watch an R rated movie.
But now the disagreement:
While the majority of those pushing an anti-sex agenda are male, and while those most likely to be physically impacted are women, I don't think their intent (at least conciously) is to subjegate women. The anti-sex attitude extends to men as well as women.
And, sadly, I suspect that while the leaders are male, most of their footsoldiers are women. Take a look at those who picket abortion clinics.
