Most honest Republicans now know that Bush is incompetent. As the president hit a lowly 32 percent in the polls, they are speaking out and telling the truth about their failed commander in chief. This is an election year, however, and Karl Rove is apparently ordering Republicans to put a lid on it. According to The New York Times:
Republican and White House officials are also telling fellow Republicans that criticizing the president risks bringing the party down with him. At the same time, party officials have said they do not want the election to be a referendum on Mr. Bush.
Will the rare burst of Republican honesty subside? Can Rove get the genie back in the bottle? I think he has his work cut out for him, as even the most brainwashed partisans can't pretend that Bush is a worthy president.

Forget the Genie, rove should try to get bush's booze back in the bottle.

"Republican and White House officials are also telling fellow Republicans that criticizing the president risks bringing the party down with him."
Well, no. The only chance the Republican Party has of seeming even remotely credible in the upcoming elections is to say "yeah, he's a complete bubbling idiot... but I'm not".
As long as they try to happy-talk about Bush, they'll be seen as the same as Bush. If the Reps want to be taken seriously, they'll have to dump him, Rove, and all of the hard-right nuts that keep getting indicted. Unless it looks like they've cleaned house, ain't nobody gunna want ANY more years of the same.
If they select Frist or someone like that as the candidate in 2008, they can kiss their brief moment in the sun goodbye. If they pick Guilliani, McCain, or Pataki or someone not seen as a right-wing insider they have a fighting chance.
Nonetheless, I expect major losses in the Senate and House this year.
