(Richard Cohen)

Today, disgraced "counselor" Richard Cohen has once again gone off the deep end with insane attacks against me. My crime - informing America on the bizarre methods this witchdoctor uses on clients. With such loony and unprofessional rantings, is it any wonder he was kicked out of the American Counseling Association?

Recently, Cohen has graced CNN and Jimmy Kimmel Live, making a buffoon of himself by slamming a tennis racquet into a chair to unleash rage and supposedly become straight.

Cohen has also fondled men on TV and had the nerve to call it therapy. This nuttiness has even alarmed fellow conversion therapist Warren Thorckmorton who disingenuously feigned revulsion over Cohen's antics. (Throckmorton was well aware of Cohen's "therapy" for years and only stabbed Cohen in the back when the lunacy found its way onto CNN.) Still, Throckmorton was wise to distance himself from Cohen after America witnessed his tomfoolery.

The following is Cohen's newsletter and my comments are in red.

WAYNE BESEN IS ABOUT HATRED & FAILURE

We live in the information age of technology where news is heard around the world in a matter of minutes. Therefore, I want to clarify misinformation and slander that has been propagated by one of the most broken and bitter men I have ever met. (No evidence of slander is provided, which is borderline libelous on the part of Cohen. As far as bitter - he's confusing me with my ex-boyfriend.)

This person, Wayne Besen, is a gay activist who unconsciously plays out his unresolved childhood trauma in public forums, i.e. Internet, radio, TV. (And all this time, I thought I was just flaking for the gay agenda! Who knew?)

In Wayne's world, he obtains energy by denigrating and demeaning anyone who does not agree with his perspective. (Actually, the real secret is a power bar before I head to the gym in the morning.)

His modus operandi is name calling, slander and character assassination. (Notice, once again, Cohen provides no evidence which is the hallmark of one who engages in name-calling, slander and character assassination.)

It is evident that Wayne was deeply abused as a child, and instead of taking responsibility to heal and grow, he retaliates by abusing others who threaten his life paradigm. His issue is not homosexuality (although that is the pretense and mask he wears), it is all about a wounded soul crying out for recognition. (A therapist is not supposed to diagnose a person who is not a client. The reason is simple: You might get a wrong diagnosis. Case in point, I was never abused and had a quite wonderful childhood. What Cohen did was highly unethical and the type of quackery that likely cost Cohen his license.)

Wayne lacks creativity. His book, Anything But Straight, is remarkably similar to my title, Coming Out Straight. (I didn't know that Cohen had a patent of the word "straight.")

In his book, he spins a web of lies and deceit, taking granules of fact, then fabricates stories to confuse his readers. (Again, no evidence is provided. Cohen mocks the intelligence of his readers by offering gossipy innuendo - which is a sin - with no supporting evidence)

He uses slander, innuendoes, and cheap gossip with little resemblance to truth. (Hmm, and just a moment ago he said I lacked creativity. Once again, Cohen offers no evidence to back his wildly irresponsible assertions)

Wayne also sucks power from failure. Over and over again he states, 'I traveled the country listening to stories of people hurt by conversion therapies and ministries.' Wayne is a collector of people's failures and feeds off their negative energy. (A collecter of failed experiences is what one does who monitors the world of re-closeted homosexuals. There simply are no success stories to report.)

"Conversion therapy" is a derogatory term he and other gay activist use to denigrate our work. Now, Wayne has created a new group called Truth Wins Out. Sound familiar? Similar to Focus on the Family's excellent Love Won Out conference. (Yes, my group is a direct challenge to Focus on the Family and so far, we are doing quite well.)

At his recent press conference to launch this new and bitter effort, he presented a cast of wounded and angry souls who failed to change. Can you imagine a similar conference, where Wayne gathered alcoholics who dropped out of 12-step groups and therapy, and then returned to drinking? (Let me get this straight. Cohen wants respect for ex-gays, yet denigrates the experience of those who call conversion therapy damaging. It seems respect for Cohen is a one way street and he speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Additionally, homosexuality is not an addiction. The scientific literature says as much, but maybe Cohen did not read it. Perhaps, this is why he was booted from the ACA....did I mention that?)

We just want to say that once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. No one can change. You're born this way, and that's it. We denounce any efforts to change, as we were badly abused by these ineffective therapists and silly ministries trying to help people go straight." (The AA success rate is much higher than the ex-gay ministries - although we will never know the real numbers because ex-gay groups refuse to keep statistics. Further, we all have met former alcoholics who are not on the payroll of right wing groups. Can we say the same about so-called former homosexuals? The only ones I have met are like Cohen - people who make their living by exploiting the desperate and the vulnerable. Finally, if the "ex-gays" really want to make the AA comparison, go for it. The saying goes that once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. If the same is true for ex-gays, then they have not been cured. They are merely repressing their feelings through willpower. This is hardly impressive, as gay men have been escaping persecution in this manner for centuries. So, much for the term ex-gay, when what they offer is a Closet Assistance Program.)

I put forth that Wayne is a frightened and insecure little boy, attacking his opponents, unable to embrace differences with respect and dignity. (Did I mention how unethical it is to diagnose a person in a different state? Cohen is just upset that I mentioned during our last radio debate that he once stranded his Moonie wife - from an arranged marriage - at home with the kids for two years while he had a boyfriend in New York City. I'd be upset too, if such facts were made public. Especially, if I made my living telling people I was heterosexual. Notice, when I discuss Cohen, I provide the facts. See the difference between us?)

I have debated countless gay activists, and we agree to disagree, respecting our differences. (I have difficulty respecting a person that willfully ignores modern science and falsely claims that all gay people suffer from abuse and dysfunction. I respect Cohen about as much as the American Counseling Association respects Cohen, which is to say not at all.)

Wayne is incapable of such mature discourse. (I have had many pleasant debates with conservatives ranging from Sean Hannity, Cal Thomas and Pat Buchanan. However, Cohen's deliberate falsification of the facts and unethical conduct must be refuted. What he finds so distressing is that I follow his work and provide viewers with the facts. Facts, are Cohen's real enemy - not me.)

I am not against him or his right to live a homosexual life. I am for equality, for the right of each man, woman and adolescent to have the right of self determination-to live a homosexual life, or to choose to change and come out straight. This freedom to choose creates anxiety and fear in Wayne. (This is not true. Cohen lobbies for the passage of discriminatory laws. His message: Change or I will make your life miserable as a gay person. Therefore, he is not about conversion, but coercion. One more Cohen lie exposed.)

I could introduce hundreds of men and women who have changed and come out straight, and he would still attack and deny their existence. (Hundreds? That's odd, for I read his book and NONE of the people had gone from gay to straight. They were all seemingly basket cases who were on a "journey" with no finish line in the foreseeable future. It is time Richard provides evidence of these cured clients, because the word of a disbarred therapist does not hold much currency in his profession.)

If Wayne, and others like him, were secure in their homosexuality, they would not have a need to vilify those who chose to change and leave the homosexual life behind. (This newsletter makes Cohen seem like the very epitome of wisdom and maturity. Can we say the man appears to be "unraveling" in plain view?)

We must therefore show Wayne great love and compassion. (I can see by this newsletter Cohen's boundless capacity for compassion. It was dripping with love. I'm truly moved.)

- END -

Cohen gets away with his therapy scheme by artfully dodging the law. He recently told The Washington Post that he is not licensed as a therapist because he "didn't want to jump through the hoops and deal with the heterophobia and anti-ex-gay attitudes." He circumvents the licensing requirement by asking for donations to his foundation. "I am not doing therapy per se," he said. "I'm coaching."

If you have been "coached" by Mr. Cohen and found it to he a harmful experience, please share your story with my organization, Truth Wins Out. By doing so, you may help a lot of people escape the ex-gay trap and live rich and fulfilling lives as openly gay men and women.

Well what can I say? Throckmorten and others have distanced themselves...clearly Richard has set himself up for some serious "abuse" it's looking like a pattern in his life. Richard your going to need therapy from a real therapist after all of this insanity. You might want stop this now. Your making a joke out of your life and ministry. Stop going Hollywood...they are making fun of you at your expense. You are feeding the fire and frankly it looks bad. As for you and Wayne ... You two need a time out and should probably keep your distance from each other. It has become a silly little battle (fued) and it's pretty immature on both sides. Let it go. In the bigger picture of life theyr' are much bigger fish to fry.Don't you think?

I love the part where Cohen diagnoses Wayne. That's professional integrity right there. The man's GOT to be good. Well...at least as good as the kids on AOL who sit around saying things like "The reason you're such a miserable person is because your parents wouldn't let you have a pet rock and now you lash out at everyone who tries to talk to you."

Is it difficult to track down people who were subjected to Cohen's conversion therapy? I mean, seriously, motivating these people and giving them the tools and support and encouragement to start suing these assholes who are preying on them and abusing them is going to be about the only way to get them to stop. I realize that it'd be difficult for an adult to launch a successful suit, but I'm thinking of these kids that are thrown into conversion therapy. One would think that they'd grow up. And be very angry.

Opening up a forum for people to share their experiences with conversion therapy would be nice. I see that Wayne offered people to email him--what about a forum for people to share their stories?

Anonymous at 12:00 on 7/11/2006, Wayne has elsewhere provided full information on the reasons why Mr. Cohen was expelled from the ACA.

This latest from Mr Cohen is a farrago of nonsense and illustrates pretty will his untruthfulness.

The opening comments on Mr. Cohen's website, respecting evidence for biological factors in same-sex desire are simply UNTRUE.

And Mr Cohen has yet to prove true his assertion that he can produce any person whose sexual desire has changed.

The 'diagnosis' provided by Mr Cohen in his 'newsletter' establishes very firmly that he is an unscrupulous charlatan, as indeed does the whole newsletter.

Do not buy Snake Oil, folks. It never made anyone better yet - it only made them poorer.

For those who have had the opportunity to see the DVD of my documentary FISH CAN'T FLY, www.fishcantfly.com there are some brief interview clips with Wayne's mom and dad included in the "bonus" material. I still recall Wayne's father talking with great pride about what a total jock Wayne was as a kid, and how as a family, they attended all of the sports events that Wayne participated in including baseball, basket ball and football. The idea that someone who has likely never met Wayne's parent to make accusations about him having a troubled childhood is so outrageous and really raises some questions about professional and personal integrity. Very sad.
posted by Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/11/2006 9:03 AM

Wayne's constant reminders that Coehn was kicked out of the ACA are completely relevant because Cohen is passing off what he does as psychological therapy, something he is not sanctioned to do by official channels. Therefore, his methods are slipshod at best, dangerous at worst, as they have been determined ineffective and unethical by the very board the should be overseenig him.

That being said.

Great repsonse, Wayne. For all the aching that Cohen does about being attacked, he certainly doesn't hesitate to insult and denigrate you in ways that could conceivably be construed as slander. I think, just maybe, you've touched a nerve.

You know what is sad? What is sad is that Wayne can only think of childish retorts to Cohen's comments. Wayne may think he is being smart and funny and charming to his "gay followers" but in truth he is perpetuating the myth that homosexuals are immature and underdeveloped pyschologically. This kind of article smacks in the face of legitimate gay activists who want their lives and mission to be taken seriously by the majority of voters (who by the way are not gay). When this kind of journalism pervades our community, our credibility slides down a little more each day.

Wayne, it is time to grow up. Oh, wait! Then again you are gay and don't have to accept responsibility for yourself - that is what others are suppossed to be doing - right? Oh- no - that would left??? Whine Besen should be your name. You choose one desparate therapist to pick on over and over again. FYI, there are many reparative therapist who still belong to the ACA - they just don't engage in crossing the touch boundary with their clients. As far as the success stories- you hear them - but like your counter parts who choose not to believe that you are truly gay - you choose to believe that people have not truly changed. Hmmmm, sounds kind of like a double standard to me.

You cannot make accurate statistical statements about AA since they do not record people who have joined, succeded, left, failed, tried something else etc.. Therefore you cannot compare therapeutic success to AA at all. Just making an observation - not a political statment and not an argument for the right wingers. Just keeping your statments in touch with reality.

Regan, you sound like a nice person but when they gay community is asking us as voters to vote on their rights, then it becomes our business. You cannot live in this world isolated from others around you who are different. And gays are a minority group. And when the majority votes on your rights - it is our business. And when we see people publicly at the gay parades or wherever wearing g-strings, nipple clips, next to the family float - we have got to wonder what and how children are being raised in the gay community. Now, I know not everyone is into all of that other stuff but it does send a rather dim message to the major voting public. And when people like Wayne Besen start national organizations to raise money for the gay community and then goes to his blog and rips apart people then that also send a dim message. And if he makes it public then it is people's business. It really is time for the gay community to start understanding the realities of their behavior when they want to act up. Just like the Fundamentalist Christians have a price to pay for their poor behavior from the past.

Wayne only 'rips apart' those who actively try to make life miserable for glbt persons; therefore they deserve it. And to the above comment about nipple rings at parades etc., although I can see your point to some extent, i think the endless amounts of violence that kids are exposed to as well as being indoctrinated by their churches/mosques etc. to hate those who are different does a lot more harm to them as well as society than seeing a bunch of drag queens in a parade once a year. Last point, in the documentary about Rosie O'Donnell's gay family cruises, many of the crew members commented on how well behaved and adjusted the children were, and I'm sure they get LOTS more exposure to gay culture, including the campy side, than children of heteros do.

You make many assumptions about people who see things differently than you (that I am a right winged christian). But that is your limited view.

We probably vote the same way - since I support same sex marriages. And the reason striaghts vote on your rights is because blacks, men, hispanics, gays, single moms, rich people, poor people, vote on my rights. It's the same for gay people - others ( who are different from you) vote on your rights.

So....? You vote on how money in the community will be spent for schools, senior citizens, etc..

And as far as my statment about rights being a privilege what I was saying is that I vote against black kids and their boom boxes (limited rights), I vote against gay men who want to have their porno shops in my neighborhood (limited rights) I vote against religious right wingers to picket and disturb patrons of an abortion clinic (limited rights) etc... I never have said nor will I say that gays should not have equal rights. I am saying that rights are not unlimted and that they are voted on. And if the gay community wants legitimacy then they need to take a good look at how they are presenting themselves. No one is going to permit children to be exposed to a maniken (sp?) with his crotch in a leather pouch because it is that man's right to "dress that way". Please refer to the castro neighborhood. That is just wrong on so many levels. And unfortunately, these things get magnified 100x in the media. The right wing latches on to these oddities and you lose all credibility. That's all I'm saying.

I like jeans - but I don't wear jeans to the office - it doesn't go over well with clients. I like beer - but I don't drink beer during office hours. Same thing - everyone has fetishes of some sort - but this society is not apt to accept them and then vote for marriage rights. As a minority group gays still have to sell themselves. No - they are not thought of as equals. I'm sorry but that is a sad reality of life that people will place others in some sort of pecking order. Saying that it isn't right is not going to change things. And blacks did not go out in puiblic and flaunt their sexuality. Women did not go out and flaunt their sexuality. Every right for an individual has been fought for in this country. Unfortunately, blacks and women make up a greater population than gays ever will. They had a greater economic impact on the country and their communities than do gays.

I have great difficulty in believing that there are such persons, or more especially, that any person has done so through any kind of clinical methodology. Currently, in fact, I do not believe it.

I would be fascinated if any of the many that you seem to know, would be willing to describe how the process took place and was completed for them.
