I criticized Obama when he hosted that gospel tour in South Carolina featuring ex-gay gospel singer Donnie McClurkin. He deserved to get challenged on this issue.
Today, Obama deserves praise. At arally in Beaumont, Texas, (not a gay mecca, if you were wondering) he was asked a question about gay issues and called homophobia unChristian. This comment was in front of a mostly black, heterosexual audience. This took guts and he deserves credit.

Um yeah, well actually, homophobia is VERY Christian. It's in the Bible itself, and Christians have been spreading it for centuries to the cultures they've conquered.
I think what Obama means is that homophobia is immoral, and like a lot of religious people, he confuses morality with his religion.
It's a step in the right direction and he should be applauded, but there's still a lot of work to do.

eshto, can you point me to a chapter and verse where Christ (you know the one CHRISTians are supposed to follow) supported homophobia or any other kind of bigotry.
I don't want to hear what Paul had to say or what Moses had to say, I'll leave that to the Paulians and the Mosesians; I want to hear what Christ said that you feel supports homophobia.
Zeke - Jesus supported the old law and makes frequent references to it. While he didn't specifically come out against gays by name, he *DID* support Mosaic law which does specifically condemn us. QED.

If I remember correctly, the old testament refers to the Jewish religion, the new testament to Christianity. Leviticus and other damning references are mostly all contained in the old testament. I don't recall ever reading in the new testament one reference to Jesus Christ lambasting homosexuality. If anyone can disprove that, please inform us here.

Good for Obama. But, I'll still never vote for a Negro.
The best that the fundies can come up with is Matthew 19 in which Jesus taught on marriage, that a man joins with a woman and they become a new flesh. But it is such a massive extrapolation to use that against gays that it makes it obvious that they are going to scripture in order to justify pre-existing bigotry, not to learn the truth. Plus, in Matthew 19:11-12, Jesus even says "Some cannot accept this marriage teaching", a part which is conveniently left out of their immoral practice of lifting out a few earlier verses in order to condemn gays and lesbians.
Does everyone on this board REALLY know just how scurrilous these people are? Read Matthew 23 in its entirety because that's where Jesus told just how bad they are. He condemned the fundamentalists outright, and they were the only ones Jesus ever did condemn. He welcomed and embraced all others, especially those considered outside the circle of humanity! Jesus was a man of peace and love. That might not win any political campaigns for the Republicans, but any claim that Jesus was homophobic is utter sacrilege.

Anonymous, again, I would like to see chapter and verse where Christ supported and promoted Mosaic law.
I can give you a number of verses where Christ specifically condemned people for following ridiculous rules and regulations from the strict prohibitions of the Mosaic laws of Leviticus.
Jamieson, you are in no position to decide who or who isn't a Christian, and maybe if you'd actually follow the Bible you claim to appreciate so much, you'd remember that only God can judge. And as for the United Church of Christ, those humble people are more loving and generous in their spirit than someone like you will ever be. Who are YOU to judge those millions? As for "taking the bad stuff" out of the Bible, if you understood anything about the canon of scripture, you would know that a whole lot of "extra stuff" was added to the texts hundreds of years after they were written, once the Christian church decided that Jesus was divine.

"Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' 'You shall not covet,' and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." Romans 13:8-10 nkjv

He chose his words carefully. Of course, anyone on any side of the homosexual issue will say homophobia is unchristian.

How the fuck does the wedding at Canaan 'affirm heterosexual marriage'? Like Adam and Steve could have ever had a wedding in first century Palastine! You fake exclusionist "Christians" are just the type of hypocrite that Jesus railed against. Turning water into wine would be easier than turning Jamieson from a gay closet case into a *real* heterosexual.
