In 2004, at the height of the firestorm that was set off by Mayor Gavin Newsom authorizing same sex marriages in San Francisco, previous Mayor Willie Brown held a fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama. The candidate had a request to Mayor Brown:
"And he said to me, he would really appreciate it if he didn't get his photo taken with my mayor. He said he would really not like to have his picture taken with Gavin."
5 Comments:
To be fair, it kind of sounds like Democrats were mad at the mayor for handing the Republicans a wedge issue right before an election.
So theoretically, Obama might not have anything against gays, he was just trying to be politically strategic and stay well away from the firestorm the mayor's action caused.
I'm not defending him, just trying to uncover the context of his behavior, that's all.

Eshto, what you said I think is a bit naive. The fact of the matter is, Obama has stated emphatically that he is NOT for same-sex marriage, neither is Clinton. Personally, I'm not comfortable with either of them. Clinton has accepted more money from defense contractors than any other on both sides of the aisle, plus she's accepted a donation from arch homophobe, Rupert Murdoch who owns Fox and other media enterprises. I will concede though that both candidates are a damn sight better than anything in office or any who are running on the other side. It is now up to us Greens, the true progressives to prod whoever wins over to the progressive side once elected.

LOL Bart!
An "EX-GAY" homophobe at that!
And speaking of which, I'm getting sick of Obama's campaign calling every single day, at least 2 times, and as much as 5 a day. Either I don't pick up, or when their # fools me as a local # on the caller ID, I hang up.
My roomie donated once or twice early on in his campaign, but the McClurkin thing changed his mind and he hasn't donated since. But they still keep on calling.
