Family Law Attorney Don Schweitzer appeared on the O'Reilly Factor to oppose same-sex marriage. When pressed, he could not come up with a cogent or lucid reason why Californians should vote against granting gay people marriage equality. Watch the video to see how intellectually bankrupt our opponents truly are. We can only hope this clown is the one who argues any future court cases for the right wing.
Also, opponents of same-sex unions were pondering a range of legal and legislative challenges to Gov. David A. Paterson's new policy of having state agencies honor same-sex marriages that have been performed outside New York. However, such challenges are likely to fail and face an uphill fight, legal experts said.
Surely the trailing edges of society will soon reflect on the resistance to this phenomenon with chagrin and more than a little embarrassment. It is bracing, after all, to realize how recently much of this nation blanched at interracial marriage, and thrilling to recognize how quickly most of us buried that prejudice, first in law, then in custom.
10 Comments:
Some people are against same-sex marriage, but the small number who go all out and actively make it their life's purpose to keep gay people from receiving the marriage rights that they take for granted ("bigotry activists") are bankrupt individuals who should be ashamed of themselves. Many who eventually see the light say that they truly regret their actions. Our opposition has finally reached the point of absurdity. Our time has come.

The reason that the argument against gay marriage is losing speed is a good thing. Marriage is a basic civil right that should be attainable by all Americans if they choose. For those who are uncomfortable with gay marriage check out our short produced to educate & defuse the controversy. It has a way of opening closed minds & provides some sanity on the issue: www.OUTTAKEonline.com

My take on it is is this. If we can fight in their hetero wars and die for them, as well as pay taxes often more to support married heteros who get lower tax breaks and child allowances and a host of other benefits including a free public school education at our expense, then we should have the same rights and privileges that they take for granted through marriage. This is purely a civil rights issue and civil rights should NEVER be put to referenda. African Americans would never have gained their rights if that had been the case during the 60s and the miscegenation laws would still be in place.
This is nothing but hate and its the party of hate, the GOP, that is at the root of it all, the party that is in lockstep with christofascist rightwingers.

Some moderate right wingers and moderate democrats such as Clinton and Obama actually believe that civil unions are the solution to the same-sex marriage debacle. What these ignoramouses are unaware of is that civil unions only provide roughly 400 of the 1324 right and privileges that marriage confers, where's the equality in that?
The only society that offers all the rights and privileges of marriage without the name is the UK via its civil partnership law where they are recognized at the national level and are portable within the country as well as Spain which recognizes them as an equivalent to marriage. Civil partnership and marriage rights in the UK are identical and its a huge difference compared to the flawed civil unions at the federal level that the two contenders are opting for.

And anyone who thinks that giving us the same rights (even though that's not what's happening) under another name needs to read Brown v. The Board of Education. Separate but equal, said the Supreme Court, is never equal. Separateness itself creates inequality.
It all comes down to one thing: discrimination. The good news is that discrimination and oppression aren't sustainable over the long term, and once change begins, it can't be stopped. If it could, the USSR would still exist.
I think it'll take a while, but we'll get there.
