By 51 to 42 percent, state voters believe gay couples have the right to marry, according to a May 17-26 poll of 1,052 registered voters. The poll was taken after the May 15 California Supreme Court decision overturning a state ban on same-sex marriages. The results marked the first time in more than 30 years of state polling that a majority of Field Poll respondents favored making gay marriage legal.

The more people learn about this issue - the more they will support marriage. The idea that gay couples will affect heterosexuals who want to marry is ludicrous. Any straight person who believes this needs serious psychiatric help and a marriage counselor. The fair-minded majority are beginning to see through the right wings bizarre and illogical arguments.

I have hope that the anti-gay amendment will fail decisively. It can happen, especially if there is a large, motivated Demopcratic turnout. We will work hard to make sure it does. I understand how some older Americans cannot get their minds around the idea, but there is something particularly sad about any dark soul who actively makes keeping gay people out of the circle of humanity one of their life's purposes.

Chris, a lot of those oldsters still cant stomach seeing a mixed race couple in public, especially a white woman and a black man. I still remember the days when, if someone announced that they were dating someone new, one of the first questions asked was, 'is he/she Catholic or Protestant'. Jewish was out of the question and I'm sure in Jewish homes they would have had a cow if the new squeeze were a Christian. Fortunately times are changing, albeit slowly.

Okay so random story you might enjoy:

My friend was working for an organization fighting the marriage ban over here, and he was doing the door to door thing.

So he comes to this house, and the guy comes out. My friend gives him the shpiel. The guy says, yes, I absolutely believe gay people have the right to get married, and he puts his name down.

So my friend asks if there are any other family members he could talk to, and the guy replies that he has a wife. He goes and gets her.

The wife comes out and she says no, absolutely not, homosexuality is wrong and gays should not get married.

The husband looks at his wife wide-eyed and incredulous. Are you serious, he asks? You're homophobic?

They then proceed to argue and scream at each other, as my friend slowly backs away...

Long story short: that was one heterosexual couple whose relationship was negatively affected by gay marriage!

Ha ha ha!!

And I suppose straight divorced couples blame marriage equality too! Who are they to say we don't have the right to marry, fine examples of the straight mentality and the double-standard. I see none of the right wingnuts going after them or lecturing them on the sanctity of marriage, Vito Fossella notwithstanding. Nothing but hypocrisy, bigtory and hate. If I've said this a hundred times before and I'll say it again. Same-sex marriage foes and especially the GOP are morally bankrupt.

Gay marriage really is a misnomer and I think it turns a lot of straights off. We should be simply calling it what it is..."marriage" and the quest for full equality as marriage equality. I've never heard marriage referred to as "straight" marriage, have you? It sounds politically correct and probably is, but persistently calling it "gay marriage" alienates some straights and weakens our chances.

Good point Robert. I also think it would be a good idea for GLBT people to use the word 'equality' instead of 'rights'. They cant spin *special equality* the way they can *special rights*. 'Rights' are more fluid, equality is not. You may lose your 'right' to drive, but you never lose 'equality' under the law.

Yeah I totally agree with both of you on that, very good points.

I think calling it just "marriage" doesn't just benefit gay equality either, I think it benefits the entire institution of marriage.

The haters keep defining marriage as "man and woman", or "Christian tradition".

Where is love? Commitment? Honesty? Those things are nowhere in their arguments. They're pushing for conformity and tradition and in the process ignoring and undermining everything else that marriage stands for.

The enlightened definition of marriage is two consenting adults in love, committing to sharing a life together and entering into a contract that binds them together legally.
