40 percent of Americans think marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages; 56 percent disagree. In 1967 at the time the Supreme Court lifted the ban on interracial marriage, 71% of the electorate was against lifting the ban.
Support has grown over the last dozen years; in 1996 just one in four Americans thought marriages between gays and lesbians should be valid. However, over the past four years support has fluctuated between 37 and 46 percent.
Support for recognizing same-sex marriages as legally valid, by region, according to this week's poll:
* 51 percent in the West; * 51 percent in the East; * 35 percent in the Midwest; * 30 percent in the South.
49 percent of Americans favor a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as being between a man and a woman, 48 percent oppose such an amendment.
26 percent of those who oppose legal recognition of same-sex marriages say they will vote only for candidates for major office who share their view on the issue. By contrast, only 2% of those who favor making same-sex marriage legal define themselves as one-issue voters on the subject.
This poll was conducted on telephone interviews with 1,017 national adults from May 8 to May 11, 2008. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

No surprise that the south is the worst of all. All I can say is, there is no stopping us now. NJ will be next. Lets get rid of Bruno in the NYS senate and a few others and replace them with dems, then we'll be next to follow suit. Until that happens, we'll be waiting a lot longer.

I told a friend of mine yesterday that the bigots in CA and elsewhere just dont learn from history. The handwriting is on the wall. YOU LOST THE CULTURE WARS! Just like you lost the war against sufferage for women and equality for African-Americans. It's only a matter of time before gay marriage is the norm and people of the future will wonder why 'they' wasted so much time and money on attacking GLBT equality instead of helping the poor, sick, hungry and uneducated. Of course, when it comes to education, they had better start with themselves!

All this poll tells us is what we already know. The midwest and south are havens for ignorance and bigotry, I should know, I live in the midwest and have lived in the south I've experienced it from both ends... so to speak.
