Dr. Warren Throckmorton has lashed out at me in a mad fit of rage after the APA canceled his quack forum. To execute his smear campaign, he turned to discredited right wing publications, such as World Net Daily (WND) to do his dirty work. Throckmorton's goal was to create an echo chamber of irrationality, where multiple fundamentalist news articles - published at the same time - misrepresented what I had written, in a transparent effort at character assassination.
Fortunately, Throckmorton's underhanded tactic has backfired. A media watchdog, ConWebWatch, exposed the untruths in the "Weird Nut Daily" article and also noted that WND scrubbed reference to shamed researcher Paul Cameron.
This past week has only further diminished the unlicensed counselor's standing and shown how close he is to anti-gay activists at right wing publications. It is time that Throckmorton apologize for his misrepresentation of my work.
Finally, PFOX should stop lying about a bogus hate crime that never took place at a Virginia fair. They pulled the same crap a few weeks later at the Falls Church fair - but this time they embarrassed themselves because media was present. The "ex-gay" group is a nut magnet and draws unbalanced people who need serious psychological help. What kind of wackos seek to fake such incidents?
19 Comments:
Desperate whackos, that's who, because they know their ship is sinking and for people with authoritarian personalities, the end always justifies the means. Is this Throckmorton supposed to be straight? If so, why does he have OCD about homosexuality? What a wasted life. Gary (NJ)

I wouldn't say he lashed out at you. I'd say you are a bit obssessed with the guy, though. And if he has OCD with homosexuality - then so do you???

Bullshit!!! We're just defending ourselves. If we had full equality and protection under the law and ignorant homophobic bigots like you and Throckmorton would leave us alone, there would be no need for websites or organizations like this one! Gary (NJ)

Uh, yes, and well, Wayne actually IS a homosexual man, and on top of that he's an advocate for gay equality, sort of his career and stuff, so, like... it's not altogether surprising that homosexuality would be on his mind. Maybe?
I mean.. um... DUH. Yeah. That's really all I can say about that, is just, duh.
So...
...
Why again is someone like Throckmorton so obsessed with the subject???
And uh, anonymous... why are you going out of your way to comment on the subject as well...? Are you the same "anonymous" that posts almost weekly? You got a name there, pal? Huh?

Wow - some reaction. BTW, I'm not an ignorant homophobic bigot. And I do support gays. Go figure - anyone who critiques a gay man is instantly called an ignorant homophobic bigot - sounds kind of like jumping the gun- don't ya think?
Just saying that Wayne has made several posts about this guy - numerous over the last few days. And it seems excessive. Just calling it how I see it.

Wayne --
You know you're doing good when you have Throck's panties in a bunch.
You hit the nail on the head when you responded to some of the posts on Throck's site ... that these groups protest the "Day of Silence", for example.
So.. what ... if you oppose Anti-bullying - then what? You advocate bullying and harassment of GLBT kids?
Let's not forget young Eighth grader - Lawrence King was murdered simply for being gay.
You hit the nail on the head - these Ex-gay whack jobs fail to connect their message with real world consequences.
By spreading a message of intolerance and false hope - these groups contribute to the problem -- and in Africa apparently *rape* is just *conversion therapy*.
From what I understand, Throck is supposed to be "ex-gay".
He can't be all that "ex-gay", because homosex is all he ever talks about.
I feel sorry for those guys, because homosex and their fixation on "eliminating homosexuals" is all they ever think about.
None of them have any hobbies (that has nothing to do with homosex), I don't see anything that shows what kind of music they like - absolutely no personality.
It's a wonder they're alive. If I was that god-damned miserable, I'd just off myself.

Hey Anon --
Obviously since you lurk and post on Wayne's site - you must know that Wayne is the Founder and Exec Director of Truth Wins Out.
Wayne is doing what Wayne does best -- exposing nutjobs like Throckmorton to the light of day. Sunshine and full disclosure is as they say the best disinfectant.
Wayne is very much obsessed with exposing these nut jobs and their lies and distortions.
Yeah - but aren't there a lot of other guys he could focus on? This can't be the only guy who focuses on therapy for homosexuals?? By Wayne's own account there are hundreds if not thousands of people out there.
Like I said - sounds fishy - like an obsession or a personal vendetta or something.
And I don't think this guy opposses the Day of Silence. In fact, only groups like FOTF or other fringe people/groups are oppossed to the Day of Silence.
Just sounds like a lot of talk without investigation and a lot of talk about one guy. Strange.

Wayne's focus on Throck pales in comparison to Throck's obsession with Wayne, openly gay people, and lots of homosex.
And PLEASE, anon - don't suggest Wayne thinks Throck is hot. I'll be laughing all weekend.

Dear Anonymous:
You remind me of one of those people who thinks he's clever but needs a dictionary to spell I.Q. Seriously, if you are going to challenge me on this site, the least you could do is make me work to debunk you - so I feel like I'm earning my money.
You write: "Yeah - but aren't there a lot of other guys he could focus on? This can't be the only guy who focuses on therapy for homosexuals??...sounds fishy - like an obsession or a personal vendetta or something."
The facts: I go after many hypocrites and anyone who lies about GLBT life. To name a few:
Porno Pete LaBarbera http://www.waynebesen.com/2006/07/porno-pete-to-picket-tubs.html
James Dobson www.RespectMyResearch.org
Chad Thompson http://www.waynebesen.com/2007/02/chad-thompson-unusually-good-liar.html
Alan Chambers http://www.waynebesen.com/2006/09/alan-chambers-i-used-to-steal-money.html
Randy Thomas http://www.waynebesen.com/2005/12/ex-gays-launch-ad-campaign-opposing.html
So, Anonymous, it looks like I have a lot of "vendettas." Please, in the future, do your homo-work, before you make a complete and utter horses ass of yourself. Then again, please continue as you are - as you make the rest of us look like Einstein.

I was just saying that recently this seemed to be your focus. I know you have others to take to task. That's all.
Why do you have to insult people all the time? Sort of a caricature?

I'll speak up as one who DOES like this blog, but doesn't think "anonymous" is just some "schmuck," nor do I think he is a "homophobic bigot" because he didn't say anything homophobic. I don't think that insulting someone or immediately pouncing defensively is a great way to respond to criticism. Nothing crazy or over the top was spoken, but I'll agree that I think the rhetoric over here has gotten very charged. Sometimes there are commenters on the blog that make remarks I find to be on the extreme side. That's not Wayne's fault at all, but I wish people would be a bit more polite sometimes. Now, you could say that the ex-gay/anti-gay industry is just getting their due, but I think the sometimes we need to be better than folks like MassResistance - whose blog is oozing with hate and desperation. This blog is NOT oozing with those things, but it does get angry.
I know, I know, If I don't like it, just get lost. But I want to make it clear that I whole-ly support TWO's work and I think I read "Anything But Straight" 3 or 4 times. But maybe the climate around here is just a bit too angry for my taste.

If everyone in the gay community could be as assertive as Wayne towards the "ex-gays" and "ex-gay therapists", these guys would be put out of business - which is what this whole thing is anyway = a moneymaking scheme, and nothing more.
I'm glad Wayne doesn't go crawling behind Randy Thomas, every time he plagiarizes the Nazi's anti-Jew propaganda. Most other "ex-gay survivors" gives him a free pass, every time. That has to stop.
The same goes for allowing Alan Chambers to dance around and change his story to protect his ass, after he does the same thing on national TV.
I'm suspicious of many "ex-gay survivors". They're too buddy-buddy with the Exodus and NARTH crowd for my taste, and for the well-being of the gay community.
I'd rather trust somebody who doesn't allow any breathing room for these nuts. The longer the buddy-buddy crap continues, the worse things will eventually get.
Go "be like Gandhi" to somebody who actually deserves it.
Wayne has my full support, even if he does come across as over-the-top sometimes. At least he's got a pair.

OF COURSE this is what Wayne would be focusing on as of late - this was the major ongoing story in the ex-gay movement. And if this discredited Throckmorton douchebag is misrepresenting Wayne's comments and his work, then Wayne has every right to fight back and correct those lies and accusations. As do all the other people whose words and research get twisted by these nutjobs.
I hope Wayne keeps pestering this guy, and all the rest like him, until the day he dies. And unless people out there are making their own efforts to fight intolerance, I don't think you have much of a right to criticize the way Wayne goes about it. If you think there are other ways to go about it, then do it yourself - write your own blog, do your own research, etc. I'm an art grad student, and I incorporate social justice issues into my work all the time. My last public piece I did was about gay marriage.
There's too much bitching in this country and not enough people getting off their asses and working toward the world they want to live in. And meanwhile a very few people like Wayne go out every day and take shit from all kinds of people on all sides to make the world a better place for strangers. I don't always agree with him either, but give him credit.

Wayne - I love your work. Don't let these big mouth ex-gay fakes or sanctimonious, do-gooder idiots get you down. Keep kicking the right's ass. That's why they hate you so much and really don't give a hoot about many of the other groups. Never let up. We NEED you!!
I find it most amusing that many of these "ex-gay" characters (eg. Peter LaBarbara) double as representatives of "Concerned Women For America."
