Republican Senator Dole introduced an amendment to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after the recently deceased Jesse Helms. The blog Joe.My.God recalls some of Helms' notable moments in AIDS relief:
** Jesse Helms, the man who in 1987 described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up."
** Jesse Helms, the man who in 1988 vigorously opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."
** Jesse Helms, the man who in 1995 said (in opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act) that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."
** Jesse Helms, the man who in 2002 announced that he'd changed his mind about AIDS funding for Africa, but not for American gays, because homosexuality "is the primary cause of the doubling and redoubling of AIDS cases in the United States."
Dole should be ashamed of herself. What an obnoxiously insensitive, despicable, insulting action for her to take. This reprehensible act is unforgivable. She can go to hell.
Oh, and for all you little closet case staff members skipping around her Washington and North Carolina offices - you should resign today or be outed for your low-self esteem and enabling hypocrisy.
The right-wing nuts want us to live in an orwellian, Animal Farm world where up is down, war is peace and some people are more equal than others. They're crazy making! Dr. Goebbels could take lessons from *them*. The latest, I heard, is that now they're trying to make Obama sound more like bush than McCain and I'm sure a certain percentage of Americans who havent evolved opposable thumbs yet will believe it. Dole is a master practitioner of Bitchcraft! Gary (NJ)

WOW! So much for civil discourse. Not that I mind. At least now I can't be chastised for my offensive style.

No, Elizabeth Dole isn't the devil--mainly because I don't believe there is a devil--but she sure bears some resemblance to the Joker! What a dumb idea to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after a right-wing homophobe like Helms.

HAHAHAHHA...civil discourse, you have to be kidding! Liz Dole looks like a bad drag queen, for goodness sakes. What a dumb thing to do, to try to name an AIDS bill after Jesse Helms! She has now qualified herself as a complete horse's ass. She is desperate to do something to appeal to the hillbillies in order to salvage her Senate seat, which polls show may turn Democratic in November. What a goofball.

Oh Puleeze! Why the name calling? It did not pass anyhow. And if someone came to a gay man's house, put a huge condom on his house and said he was deadlier than A virus - there would be a hue and cry over the nation about the injustices that gays must endure.
I didn't like Helms' rhetoric either but why is okay for gays to name call, vandalize a man's home, and then continue jumping on a dead horse?
Really aren't there other issues to deal with - like - say - I don't know - be sure to have safe sex because our money went somewhere else???

Lizzy Dole looks like one of the cross-dressing crack whores who were commonplace on Sunset Boulevard in the 1980s. No wonder Bob Dole needs Viagra.

Guess you couldn't tell that the pciture had been altered to make her look like The Joker??? Try to be more critical when viewing - some times people are manipulating the picture.

Anon 12:35--if someone put a huge condom over a gay man's house, we would have laughed at the clever campy humor and then called all our friends over to see it and have a big party. The more conservative people are, the more sour and humorless they are; something you'll also see from history. Totalitarianism = no humor! BTW, your comparison between helms and 'any ol' gay man' is specious; most gay men dont make it their career to bash, oppress and destroy the lives of others. Helms did!

The condom incident happened to Helms. If he was at your house and put a big bible or some other symbol of his life on your lawn - You'd be more tha pissed. You'd call every gay rag and media outlet you could to get the attention on how you were picked on by a conservative.

Hmmm - Wayne seems to have written a whole book on it - BTW. And he seems to spend quite a bit of time making fun of other people - Hmmmm- I guess when a gay man spend his time denouncing others - then it's okay??? Sound kind of like a double standard.
