Focus on the Family leader James Dobson released his attack dogs today, viciously smearing me because I have shown him to be dishonest and distort research. In a screed on the group's website it referred to me as an, "infamous homosexual activist" and urged his listeners to vote for him, so he could be in the Radio Hall of Fame:
"This attack is yet more evidence of why Dr. Dobson deserves a spot in the Radio Hall of Fame," said Gary Schneeberger, vice president of media and public relations at Focus on the Family.
"For 32 years, he has been willing to take the unfriendly fire of the Wayne Besens of the world because that is the price to be paid for championing family values and defending biblical principles in the public square."
What I found interesting is that Focus on the Family failed to mention the seven respected scientists who accused Dobson of distorting their work - which is the main reason Truth Wins Out launched its campaign in the first place. It seems that Dobson and his henchmen rather smear the messenger than legitimately answer why Dobson has distorted research and cherry picked the results to suit his political agenda.

I wonder why the Dobson businesses think that Wayne is an "infamous gay activist" (cue the scary Halloween music). Is it because he tells the truth? Dobson flagrantly and outrageously distorted the work of researchers and was called on it by Wayne and the very researchers themselves. Dobson does not dispute this fact, because he cannot. He has a bizarre fixation with gays and lesbians, one that is so shocking in its depth that it reveals Dobson himself to be anything but the kind Christian man he tries to convince people that he is.
He's mean and spiteful. He's a political pitbull in the image of Tom Delay and Dick Armey, who themselves claimed to be Christian in the midst of their own outrageous dishonest mudslinging. Dr. Dobson, it's time to start telling the truth. It's time to start treating gays and lesbians with love and compassion. Judge not, lest yet be judged. You are contradicting the very scripture you claim to follow so closely. It's time to stop the lies, the stigmatizing, and the homophobia. All of this must finally end, sir.

Dobson's not a kind man, he is mean and spiteful and to be honest I will dance a happy jig when that man bites the dust.
But he is most definitely a Christian. Certainly he has scripture backing him up. The Old Testament says the penalty for homosexuality is death, and the New Testament seems to say homosexuality is unnatural and a sin. Homophobia and persecution of gays and other minorities have been intrinsic features of Christianity for several centuries.
I think Dobson is right in line with his religion. And when he's gone, nothing will change. More superstitious fools will come rushing in to take his place.

And all of this when Howard Stern is also being considered?? Talk about a man without couth, character, or integrity.
Funny how a journalist is running a campaign to stop one man. And letting Lara Schlessinger and Howard Stern go by unscathed??? Sounds like a real contradiction to me. Or just a mad little boy playing out his vindictive nature on one target.

No Eshto the Bible doesnt say that because they didnt even have a concept that a person could BE a homosexual, to them it was purely behavior. And more importantly, Jesus never said a thing about it. And dobson is not representative of ANY real spiritual path, Christian or otherwise; it's all about power, control, money and hate. Yes, the abrahamic religions have an absolutely abysmal record when it comes to the equality of women and GLBT people, but that IS changing in progressive, enlightened churches like UCC and an increasing number of Episcopal churches. I know you're anti-religion, which is totally understandable, but, please, there are plenty of us who are 180 degrees from dobson and his ilk.

Anon 1:19, Howard Stern isnt a hate-monger and Schlessinger is a homophobic nutcase, but as far as we know, she never lied and twisted the scientific research of other people to push her politics. THAT'S the difference between her and dobson. You can be an ignorant bigot if you want, but if you distort and lie about others' work, you SHOULD be disqualified from the Hall of Fame and put in the Hall of SHAME instead.

Dobson shouldn't be concerned about this radio award to begin with - it's secular.
And you know how much God, I mean, Dobson, HATES secular stuff.
So why is he complaining?
If he WASN'T nominated, he'd be "secular this", "secular that", about the radio award.

The Bible can be used to say virtually anything. Those who choose to use it to further discrimination and bigotry about anyone are saying an awful lot about themselves, not about Biblical truth per se. For example, if a person is a woman-hater, they can easily quote from Paul's writings to back that up and make their ugly feelings "holy." Paul was an undeniable misogynist.
