The town was really just a series of strip malls and big box stores. There was no town center and it was kind of forgettable, like many suburban towns that are directly off the highway.
Let's just say, it will never be a tourist destination - unless Palin becomes President one day.

The reason so many churches have gone to use strip mall space is because of the cheap availability. These are difficult times for families, as well as churches, business, schools, etc... And it makes sound financial habit. Many churches are not particular in the dimensions or forms of the church - as in Catholic churches are typically entered into on the west side and everyone prays towards the east - towards Jerusalem. This has changed in recent years. I think Synagogues are also clearly defined and marked in terms of the placement of areas within, the dimensions of the fellowship area, and in which direction the "laity" faces.
Protestants are more practical in the idea that God is everywhere and can be directly communicated with via prayer (whomever, wherever)

The only Log Cabin Republican I've known was a submissive leather dude. Despite this we had a good friendship which survived my argument that he belonged to a party which wanted to destroy him. He seemed to relish this last thought since he never parried the argument. He just sort of smiled a guilty smile. His only response was "You artsy liberals just don't understand." He ended up a drunk and although his doctor warned him that he needed to cut out all booze or he'd destroy his liver, he finally managed to kill himself with booze. He might as well have used a gun.
