Palin's Church Appears to Support 'Ex-Gay' Programs

Truth Wins Out expressed deep concern today after learning that Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin's church appears to support so-called "ex-gay" ministries. These programs that aim to "pray away the gay" are ineffective and have harmed thousands of gay and lesbian people. TWO urged the media to ask Palin if she supports such programs and what her views are on this topic.

In a background article on Palin, Time Magazine revealed that Wasilla Bible Church, where the Palins worship, had a Sunday morning program insert advertising an upcoming Focus on the Family conference on curing homosexuality in Anchorage called Love Won Out. Truth Wins Out's Executive Director, Wayne Besen, will be in Anchorage next week to oppose this anti-gay symposium.

"We are deeply concerned that Sarah Palin may share the extreme and medically unsound view that gay and lesbian people can and should be cured," said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. "We call on Palin to express her views on this issue so we have a clear idea of where she stands. We hope this is an area where she disagrees with her church."

Focus on the Family's notorious "ex-gay" road show will take place at an Anchorage mega-church on Sept. 13. Besen will join several clergy and parents of gay children to speak out on the harm of ex-gay programs on Sept. 11. The seminar will be at the Metropolitan Community Church (7208 Dubin Avenue) at 6:30 PM.

What a surprise! The more I learn about this nutjob the more frightening it becomes. I hope the low information, pathetically ignorant American voters who gave us 8 years of the bush debacle wont be dumb enough to vote for this party again, but I wont be at all surprised if we end up with another 4 years of extremist crazies in power. What an embarrassment that they would even consider her! I'm going to Europe in the fall; guess I'll have to dig out my Canadian flag sweatshirt again.

Wait, it gets worse. I heard that someone in Palin's church told an anti-gay joke: John Wayne, Bing Crosby, and Rock Hudson all died in a car accident and went to the pearly gates. St. Peter said that each of them lived a wild earthy live, and that they would not be granted any lattitude. Walking along the path, Bing Crosby spotted a glass of wine. I couldn't help it and took a sip. "Poof", Bing was gone. Later, John Wayne was walking along and noticed a smoldering cigar and bent over to pick it up. Poof, Rock Hudson was gone.

This is just a dispicable joke and based on this alone we should protest Palin.

Palin and Guliani were both vicious and she is getting a path for being a woman. My blessings to anyone who wishes to tear her fucking apart. Having said that, i admit that many people will suck up this drama. Drama being the operative word. The republicans are not for the middle class. I hope they do not fool for this.

Palin is just being used, window dressing for a desperate party. Their party has NEVER passed legislation in favor of women. Listening to her speech last night and her implication that the war in Iraq is god's plan...sounded like christian jihad to me, a lot in common with Bush. I can imagine radical islamists hearing that, hardly what you would call a good example of Palin's diplomacy skills, no matter how close she lives to Russia.

No ewe, not all churches are gay haters. The United Church of Christ and Unitarians are probably the most gay inclusive, with most Episcopal churches in North America running a close second. Just 2 weeks ago the priest in the Episcopal church that I go to was condemning homophobia and sexism in the church.

It figures that her church would support the ex-gay lie. People who come from conservative christian fundamentalist evangelical churches usually do. Is she going to support ex-gay therapy as a form of "health care" for gays? frightening. Might as well condone electro-shock for us too.

ECT has been making a comeback - for depression. Scary - it's not just gays that get abused. What's even more scarey? That gays hail the APA's stance on everything as good. People should watch out for their own care and consider well what goes into the thinking behind such practices in the mental health industry. Yes, it is an industry. And they take money from innocent people.

I've read about that ECT for deppression, it's being conducted by one doctor I know of, who uses it extremely regulated - not just hooking up electrodes to your nads and sending 50 volts through them. And it's used as a last resort. The theory behind it is that the brain will be "rebooted" with the minor shocks - similar to a way a defibrilator works - and it will help correct the synaptic mis-fires that are believed to cause depression.

Since I've been dealing with depression and bipolar disorder for years now, I keep up with this sort of thing.

Anon: i knew you were gonna say that. And i knew as i was posting i should have said evangelical. the reason i did not is because you can name on one hand the churches that don't discriminate but the rest which are countless do. And even the largest of these denominations have problems accepting and loving their homosexual brothers and sisters. I was very nice and willing to give Palin a chance all day September 2 and 3 and then i heard that vicious petty bitch say her speech. I will say it again. We have the right to tear her apart for her ignorance dressed in cynicism and that is not hate speech. It is figurative speech.

I have never laid eyes on Wayne but i totally adore him for what he does. Your comment of gay history is laughable to me. This creature repels and frightens me. I have noticed one thing about these fundies--they are smug, self-satisfied ignoramuses who not only know nothing, but wish to know nothing that doesn't back their warped world-view. The problem is that the ignorance of Sarah Palin may get millions of Americans killed. We are not dealing with the USSR who, even if we didn't like the government, were at least sane enough to back off. People like the Islamic fundamentalists are not going to back off--it's the same insanity as Palin's, just a different brand name.

It is so sad that this creature was even seriously considered, let alone picked, for the VP spot. As soon as I am able, I am planning to emigrate to Canada.

It's sad that someone like Palin has even a chance, no matter how remote, at being President. I, too wonder why a sane, scientifically-literate person cannot be elected to national office. Why do these people ALWAYS drag gawd into everything?

I have noticed the general level of education going down and down and down since I left high school in 1971. There are times that I will make a cultural/literary comment to someone, and that person looks at me as if I'm from another planet. I do not know the exact ranking but the U.S. is way way down on the list of nations with scientific literacy....oh noes, we can't teach that EBIL evolution in school! But we are supposed to believe idiocy like intelligent design. That doesn't mean I am an atheist-I'm not, though I see nothing wrong in being one-it means that scientific facts are just those; FACTS, with no agenda except to find out, to the best of our ability, our history on planet Earth and how the universe works. Hell, if anything, I believe that what we have found out thus far only glorifies a creator.

This scientific ignorance extends to marginalising LBGT people. Instead of accepting us as just another part of Creation, the fundamentalists want to "pray away the gay". Why? God creates people as they are...do we want to get rid of handicapped or retarded people. No, we try to care for them and make life better. But LGBT people have to be "changed" or elimated. This is crap I expect out of Islamofascists, not supposedly educated, loving Christians. This alone unmasks their "love"--we'll love you as long as you live the way WE say.

I hate to say this, but if idiots like McCain/Palin win, we are headed for a very dark time in this country. It may not be quite as bad as in "The Handmaid's Tale", but it certainly will not be a great place for LGBT people.

I admit I would have preferred Clinton on the Democratic ticket, but I am more than willing to vote for Obama because the alternative is simply too awful to contemplate
