A new CBS 5 poll finds that California's Proposition 8 has picked up support in the wake of a television ad campaign that features footage of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaiming same-sex marriage is here to stay "whether you like it or not."
The poll conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA indicates that support for the measure to ban gay marriage has grown among voters in the state over an eleven day period -- most especially among young voters.
According to the poll, likely California voters overall now favor passage of Proposition 8 by a five-point margin, 47 percent to 42 percent. Ironically, a CBS 5 poll eleven days prior found a five-point margin in favor of the measure's opponents.
Folks, if you have not given to this campaign, please do. When I was in San Diego last week, I went by the No On 8 office and gave $100. Now, I'm an activist - so if I can give, so can you. The main reason we are falling behind is money. Don't let the right wing outspend us and virtually buy our inequality. If you can, please help out.

So the folks out in California suddenly want to take away the right of loving gay couples to marry because of a provocative TV commercial? When will people wake up? I am disgusted that anyone could look at a picture of the late Del Martin and her partner and want to take that away in the name of morality or as a backlash against Gavin Newsom.
Just when I was starting to regain a small amount of trust in the American people... Denmark, anyone?

DRAMATIC UPDATE: I have discovered that at least one of the polls in question was an "automated" poll, in which a computer calls people. These are very unreliable, so I have some hope. Also, I find it hard to believe that there's supposedly some huge jump in support for the Prop. regarding ages 18-29.

Mildred Loving, the woman involved in Loving v. Virginia, the 1967 Supreme Court case on interracial marriage, wrote a letter, supporting same-sex marriage.
“My generation was bitterly divided over something that should have been so clear and right. The majority believed that what the judge said, that it was God’s plan to keep people apart, and that government should discriminate against people in love. But I have lived long enough now to see big changes. The older generation’s fears and prejudices have given way, and today’s young people realize that if someone loves someone they have a right to marry.”
Loving continues:
“I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people’s religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people’s civil rights.”
With over an estimated 11000 gay marriages already in California, it won’t be long until gay marriage will come to pass as being ‘nothing special’. If 8 does pass, there are many people out there who will not let their committments be tossed aside. It may not happen in ‘08, ‘09 or even 10.
But it will happen.
The Mormons have taken on 8 in an attempt to clear their ‘name’ in light of the recent Mormon scandal.
