LDS Scholar: Mormon Church Took PR Hit On Prop 8

Dr. Jan Shipps, one of the nation's leading historians on the LDS Church says the reaction to the Mormon church in light of their support of Prop. 8 has been traumatic.

"I think they are really astonished that there are demonstrations at temples all over the nation," she said. "By talking to the Latter-day Saints outside of California that could come back to haunt them...It will take many, many, many months, maybe years to get this division healed."

This has always amazed me; from the theater director who resigned in disgrace (and expressed shock at the reaction to news of his donation) to the Mormon church, which is now also apparently shocked, how exactly did these folks think we would respond when they attacked our families and loved ones, and spent millions to nullify our right to civil marriage?

When we ask them, "How would YOU react if someone tried to vote on YOUR marriage," did they think we were kidding or merely putting forth a talking point? Did they not realize that we find this vote as shocking and as sickening as they would if it were done to them and their families? Do they REALLY think we are THAT different?

Their amazement is an illustration of their ignorance about us and our lives; they must really believe the nonsense about gay people that emanates from places like Fox News, as well as the propaganda from their own Christian "news" services. They don't realize that they were being duped all along and that's amazing. Yes, folks, we gays really are normal and not the demon-possessed children of hell that some of you think we are.

Chris, these people seem to be on another planet. They don't understand LGBT people. Some can't, most REFUSE to understand us. And yes, they REALLY think we are that different.

I am glad to see the Morons taking a PR Hit on Prop H8--they DESERVE it!

That is a huge thing coming from Dr. Jan Shipps. She is (Ironically) not a Mormon. Dr. Shipps has been fascinated with the Mormon Church and it's history for many years and has written some very balanced and deeply researched books on the history of the Latter-day Saint movement. She is an extremely observant person who has watched the growth of Mormonism over decades. For her to say that it will take months and perhaps years to heal these rifts you can likely count on it. She also tends to be very conservative when she makes predictions like this. She is likely thinking that the Mormon Church's involvement with prop 8 along with using their vast influence in banning marriage equality in other states will not be forgotten for a very long time.
