Portland's openly gay mayor, Sam Adams, correctly decided to remain in office after acknowledging that three years ago he had a brief affair with an eighteen year old man. Calls for his resignation were politically motivated, homophobic and cheap shots dressed in the guise of morality. Sadly, many gay and lesbian leaders got sucked into the sexual hysteria and puritanical pandemonium and called for the mayor's resignation.

If Adams had exploited an innocent youth or abused his power in office to obtain sex, I would not be defending him. The affair with Beau Breedlove, however, was consensual and Breedlove told the Oregonian newspaper:

"I do not see any relationship that I ever had with Sam as me being taken advantage of. I do not feel like I was ever a victim."

Given this reality, I am having a difficult time understanding exactly why this is a controversy. The hypocrisy, double standard and anti-gay undertones are unmistakable. If a 42-year-old male politician had hooked up with an 18-year-old Hooter's girl, he would get high fives. If he's gay, people with pitchforks want to hang him from a high tree. For the conquering straight male, the affair would be a sign of virility. For the gay man, it is the mark of vulgarity.

This all goes back to the despicable stereotype that evil homosexuals recruit children into the so-called "lifestyle." People have to realize that sacrificing Adams won't erase this insidious myth from the minds of ignorant people who choose to believe it.

As in most self-righteous inquisitions, the pious finger pointers say it is "not about the sex, it is because Adam's lied" to the media about the tryst. This is the same disingenuous nonsense that Ken "Porn" Starr and the GOP used to rationalize their attempted coup of Bill Clinton.

In my view, Adams is the victim of an overzealous media asking questions about a relationship that was none of their business. There were only two legitimate questions that should ever have been asked of Adams:

Was Breedlove of legal age?

Did Adams supervise him at work?

We know the answer to the first question (barely legal), and Breedlove was an intern in the state capitol, which had nothing to do with the city council, where Adams had served as a commissioner.

So, why is this a story?

When asked about this affair during his campaign, Adams had every right to mislead reporters. What detractors call lying, was really just personal discretion. What next, are we going to pass sunshine laws that mandate public officials must sign sexual disclosure forms listing all sexual liaisons and post their names on the Internet? Because, that is essentially what people want when they insist Adams had an obligation to discuss his private life with the media.

Like starving vultures, the press is now sensationalizing the issue. For example, ABC News' website published an Associated Press story headlined, "Gay Teen Sex Scandal Mayor Won't Resign." This is misleading and irresponsible journalism that makes Adams appear to be a letch who hangs around middle schools with lollipops.

To be fair, Adams did let down the GLBT community. When asked about the affair during his campaign, he should have either told the truth or said, "none of your business." Instead, he accused his primary opponent of gay baiting and complained, "This is one of the worst smears you can make against a gay guy. It preys on the homophobic stereotype that gay men cannot be trusted with young people."

Adams diminished the noble cause for equality when he hid behind it to conceal his relationship. He should have acted with more integrity and not made his personal saga about the larger GLBT community.

Still, Adams did apologize profusely and should be allowed to move on. Human beings are not perfect, especially politicians. Last week, hundreds of citizens rallied in front of City Hall in support of Adams, giving him the strength to fight on.

Finally, I'm not begrudging those who think that it is irresponsible and wrong for Adams to have had sex with someone half his age. Those who believe that Adams does not share their values, have every right to vote him out of office when he is up for reelection. But the notion that Adams should be recalled is nothing short of an ugly witch-hunt.

The political judgment of Sam Adams is certainly questionable. There is no question, however, that his actions do not warrant the harsh judgment of those who demand that he resign. One may not like the mayor's personal choices, but this so-called "scandal" is nothing more than a fake crime scene in search of a real crime.

Adams is no superman, as many supporters thought he once was, but he is also no scoundrel. It is time people stop taking potshots at the mayor, and let him return to work so he can repair the potholes his constituents elected him to fix.

Wayne, I totally agree, definitely is a doublestandard on the part of the media. Its the same doublestandard same-sex marriage haters use to deny us a basic civil right. Its ok for them to divorce, philander and cheat on their spouses as long as they're straight but when we get caught its disgusting, immoral and classically gay in their distorted view of who we are. Elected officials do not have the "right to mislead reporters". Adams DID lie, campaigned on the lie and used the lie to defeat a political opponent (who also happened to be gay). After 16 months, he only decided to admit his lie and trust his constituents after the Willamette Week confronted him.

It's not homophobia for holding elected representatives to the same or higher standard that we hold police/teachers/etc. and it's not a witch hunt to question our elected official's trustworthiness. Yes, Adams has apologized, but even his apology omitted and misled key information about the nature of his relationship with a minor.

As mayor, Adams will be involved in disciplining city employees, negotiating development deals, and other responsibilities requiring character and trust. It's not homophobia to question whether Adams has will be capable of re-earning Portlanders' trust while also defending himself from possible criminal charges or any civil action he has exposed taxpayers to.

Look, I don't think Adams should necessarily resign. But I have to say, there's something very strange about covering up a legal relationship, and in such an unethical manner. I mean, if it was just a matter of age difference, but it was STILL LEGAL, he should have just said "screw all of you, this is my private life and there's not wrong with dating a younger guy."

Then we find out, from Breedlove, that he and Adams had a "friends with benefits" (his words) relationship when he was 17. Which in my eyes, the eyes of a woman who has a 17 year old sister, crosses an ethical (and possibly, in Oregon, a legal) line.

And from my personal standpoint regarding relationships involving legal teenagers and middle-aged people, I stand where sex columnist and gay man Dan Savage stands. This of course has nothing to do with how well the mayor can govern. I am not calling for his resignation. But I wish that the whole truth would finally come out.

Kipsesquire. It seems that it is you who has little tolerance for my point of view. I write opinion pieces, on my views. I don't expect everyone - or even most people - to agree with me. That is not the point.

I'm not sure why the expression of my opinion represents an intolerance of yours. I'm not sure you understand the format of op-eds. I suggest you may want to stick to straight news, where all sides are hashed out. This is not that format, if you have not guessed.

Sorry, Wayne, this is one issue I disagree with you on. There is no doubt that homophobes love to trounce on a story like this. However, let's face it: Adams lied, he asked Beau to lie, and started the inapporpriate relationship while Beau was only 17 (albeit supposedly just kissing at the time.) Regardless of Adams' ability to lead, I believe he has basically rendered himself as untrustworthy. I am extremely disappointed that he sunk to those levels, and think he demonstrated very poor taste and acted as very bad role model for gays and especially gay youth.

Mayor Adams should shut up and let this story fizzle out, which it will. He made a big mistake in lying; the media LOVES to find out a liar. He should have instead said "who I have relationships with is none of your damn business as long as I'm not breaking the law, and I most certainly have not." Instead, he fell into their trap, just like Bill Clinton did with Lewinsky. As soon as the Republicans call for David Vitter to resign (who DID break a law by hiring a call girl), then I will take seriously the calls for the resignation of Adams.

...except that Adams might have broken the law by kissing and courting a 17 year old. Oregon law says that the kissing would have needed to be for sexual gratification. But IMHO such language is meant to protect people in situations that involve, let's say, a loving older family member or close friend who gives a minor a platonic smooch (in a situation that, e.g., a platonic hug might be given). Adams kissed Breedlove "on the lips" for "one minute" in a City Hall men's room. Breedlove interpreted the move as crossing the line from "friends" to "friends with benefits."

But what REALLY soils this situation is Adams' chosen defense against what was called a smear attack by a fellow gay politician: that he was the victim of homophobia; how dare anyone think he would have an inappropriate relationship with a minor; and - most importantly - that he takes pride in mentoring confused and vulnerable gay youth. And that only reinforces the anti-gay stereotype that gay men are a "danger" to "vulnerable youth" and "recruit" them into inappropriate relationships. This is the stuff ex-gay testimonies are made of.

Unfortunately Sam Adam's lying wasn't just an off the cuff knee-jerk reaction to a reporters unexpected query. Sam Adams took out full page advertisements when the story first broke last year denying the allegations and besmirching the reputation of his (gay) opponent Robert Ball. This was an intentional and well-planned attack on someone whom we now know was telling the truth. Sam Adams to my knowledge, has yet to apologize to his opponent for the damage he did to his reputation to save his own political hide. This is where the rubber meets the road, as far as I am concerned. I voted for Sam Adams last time but I have sadly come to believe him to be too ethically challenged to be Portland's mayor. With the evidence I see standing today, I will vote for his recall.

People (men and women, straight or gay) who have sex with underage children are scoundrels, except perhaps in hooker/homo land. Anyone who has sex with an underage person is charged in most countries with having committed a crime.
This is not just about a 42 yr old first gay politician. This is also about a young gay guy whose was used by a cunning politician in the fight against another gay politician.

I have always read your articles and opinions with delight. You have rightfully exposed the lies and tricks of the (un) Christian Right and the Ex-gay Movement but why have u taken tricks our of thier book and induldge in such blantant LIES and HALF TRUTHS???????

Priya, I am surprised that you would buy this BS of " we waited till he turned 18" and the criminal investigation into this matter will put the sleezeball behind bars.

I am 100% sure that the dirty Mayor lied, as in other things; if the victim was of age he could have simply insisted that his personal life was a private matter;the fact that he lied intentionally ( admitted in the conference on the 20th)shows that he is hiding something........ and he can't use the "I was fearful of being judged because i am gay" simply because his opponent was gay too!!! and the people of that constituency have shown themselves to be above bias on such matters by electing him!!!
