When President Obama lifts restrictions on funding for human embryonic stem cell research today, he will also issue a presidential memorandum aimed at insulating scientific decisions across the federal government from political influence, officials said yesterday.
"The president believes that it's particularly important to sign this memorandum so that we can put science and technology back at the heart of pursuing a broad range of national goals," Melody C. Barnes, director of Obama's Domestic Policy Council, told reporters during a telephone briefing yesterday.
What a welcome relief to have a president who not only understands science, but actually respects it and builds policies around facts. It feels like we are coming out of a long, bleak Orwellian night under the Bush regime.

And lets hope he evolves on same-sex marriage just as expediently, though I'll hold my breath on that one. We as a nation should be the trailblazers on full equality, not the trailers, sadly. So much for us being number one.....NOT.

How does stem cell resourch and cyloning really help the economy? Just how many new job will be created? I don't see where making babies to kill them is helping us be a better and stronger country right now. I don't even see the long term good.

ROBERT: how much do you want to bet that the politicians will only support same-sex marriage AFTER it's been accepted by the people? Politicians don't lead anymore; they are unwilling to risk their jobs. However, I think we can make that work for us. After it IS accepted, the politicians will ignore the haters.
VOICE: As for stem-cell research, there is no rule that says that everything the President does must be related to the economy!

Chris, I'm not so sure if enough people will accept it. If we had at least 55% of the public in each state supporting marriage equality, then it would be a done deal. As far as politicians go, I don't know why in other countries,their straight politicians including their national leaders stick their necks out and pass marriage equality. Why are we so different when you consider that those countries in Europe where marriage equality is the norm such as Holland, Belgium, Spain, Norway and Sweden all had to combat their state religions and succeeded in doing so. You would think the U.S. claiming to have no state religion would have been the first country to legalize it.
Voice....stem cell research doesn't deliberately kill fetuses. Such research is conducted on aborted fetuses, there is a difference. Scientists in the UK,Korea, Japan, Denmark and other countries that don't have restrictions do not scout around looking for women to get pregnant and then terminate their pregnancies just so their fetuses can be harvested. Their is such a thing as ethics you know even with stem cell research. You've been buying into the right wing religious opposition to any form of medical or scientific progress. Lifting the ban will enable perhaps bring about potential cures for incurable diseases and peoples' lives prolonged because of this very important research. Think of the billions of dollars that could be saved if cancer, AIDS, ALS, Alzheimers, Diabetes could be cured as a result of such research, reducing health care costs and reducing government spending as well as creating lots of jobs in the medical and scientific fields alone. Don't bury your head in the sand as the Grand Obstructionist Party has for the past eight years.
