Maine's governor (pictured) signed a freshly passed bill Wednesday approving gay marriage, making it the fifth state to approve the practice and moving New England closer to allowing it throughout the region.
New Hampshire legislators were also poised to send a gay marriage bill to their governor, who hasn't indicated whether he'll sign it. If he does, Rhode Island would be the region's sole holdout.
The Maine Senate voted 21-13, with one absent, for a bill that authorizes marriage between any two people rather than between one man and one woman, as state law currently allows. The House had passed the bill Tuesday.
Democratic Gov. John Baldacci, who hadn't previously indicated how he would handle the bill, signed it shortly afterward. In the past, he said he opposed gay marriage but supported civil unions, which provide many benefits of marriage.

Another good step in the country, overall, getting used to same-sex marriage and seeing it doesn't mean the end of the U.S.A. It makes us greater.

The anti same-sex marriage haters are now mobilizing to call for a ballot intiative allowing voters to decide. Since Maine has now legislated for the minority, why should initiatives, referenda be allowed to overturn it? I was of the understanding that laws that protect a minority cannot be overturned by the tyranny (mob rule) of the majority over the minority and is I believe prohibited in the constitution,or am I missing something?

Robert, these jerkwads just can't face the fact that they've LOST this war. It's just a matter of time before the whole nation has marriage equality. They're holed up in their bunker while Berlin burns and the Allies are advancing from all sides.

Gary, yes, true. Maybe the same haters should revisit Roe v. Wade and the struggle for equality for African Americans, both legislated by the SCOTUS, not by mob rule.
I also wonder why those of us who want tax-exempt status removed from all religious organizations that actively lobby and influence the outcome of legislation and how people should vote aren't gaining any ground? What happened to that? I wouldn't mind seeing something like that used as a ballot initiative to give the haters a dose of their own medicine just to piss them off even more.
