A spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections announced Monday that the department was reviewing its affiliation with the controversial ex-gay ministry Corduroy Stone of Lansing.

"The department's position is that when you are ministering to a group or even an individual that the content of that not be defamatory or derogatory," said John Cordell, a department spokesman. "We have shut down ministries in the past for doing just that [being defamatory or derogatory]."

Corduroy Stone, and its founder Mike Jones, have been under national scrutiny for months after 24-year-old Lansing resident Patrick McAlvey told the national organization Truth Wins Out of his experience with the ministry.

"I think it's terrific they are looking further into this mess," said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. "Corduroy Stone doesn't have the credibility to continue and is a threat to public health if allowed to continue."

Good for Michigan. I hope eventually all of these "ex-gay" groups can be shut down. This is a good start.

I just saw online that Mexico City just passed a sweeping gay rights bill including gay marriage and gay adoption (the first Latin American country to do so), ...'despite opposition from the very influential roman catholic church...' This news is similar to the story that came out of Spain and year of 2 ago. I guess those rcc f--kwads arent as influential as they think they are. Thank Goddess. Excuse my 'venom' Monica. >;-)

I am amazed at how many people, and even many institutions, are snookered by these ex-gay ministries. It wasn't until I read Wayne's book ("Anything but Straight") that I realized how crazy they were.

I thought they would at least be based upon some outdated mode of Freudian psychology, but his book (which was published as a result of his going undercover into those ministries) revealed their absurdity, one of the most famous of which is the "rubber band therapy." Sigh.
